What are HUD and DRL?

HUD is head-up display, which projects information like speed etc on your windshield.
DRL means daytime running lights

 

This is from European Prius but you get the idea.

 

Personally, I don't like HUD. It seems like a distraction. The speedo in my 2004 Prius is well within my field of vision but without being superimposed on the road.

As for DRLs, I don't see the point. I run my headlights in the daytime. Any energy saved by less-bright DRLs is not worth the safety difference. I want other drivers to see me.

 

I think the HUD is great for their turn by turn nav instructions. It's quite unsafe to look over often times at the Nav screen to find out when you're going to turn next. A simple arrow and distance indicator on the HUD i think is a fantastic feature.

 

The PIP has LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL) with on/off feature as a standard feature on both the Base Trim model and the Advanced Trim model... Good luck in your decision!

My wife really wanted the DRCC, so we went with Advanced. Haven't used a DRCC yet, so we'll see how well it works in bay area traffic.

 

I've had DRCC in my 08 Sienna. It's great on the highway with moderate
traffic. I find it's not useable in heavy traffic though (San Jose through
Palo Alto e.g.). It just doesn't react quickly enough to deal with stop and go, breaking, accordion affects. It is really great if you're behind someone where the traffic is varying between e.g. 60 ish and 70 ish. and there's a good 4/5 car lengths between you and them. The DRCC may have improved so, I'm looking forward to how well it works.

 

This I'll agree with. It's why I like my Garmin Nuvi, which sits up on the dashboard, right in my field of vision, without blocking my view of the road.

 

They call this a HUD....REALLY?
What a pricey pretty much worthless option. Don't get me wrong I love technology, however if you are going to display something, how about MPG, Speed, Fuel, oh wait, then you will have folks reading the windshield like a book! Let's just project Jerry Springer on the windshield... How many people will be come permanently cross eyed after they run into something while trying to focus on those two little tiny digits and the Airbag deploys and whacks them in the head? OWWW!

 

I drove around yesterday afternoon using HUD and I agree that maybe more information could be useful, but keeping it uncluttered is good as well. Maybe allow you to cycle through some different displays would be better.

At night the HUD looks much better than in daytime, in that you don't see the reflections from the "cubbyhole" that the hud projects from. At night it's a lot more attractive in that it floats out there.

For Navigation, the turn by turn guidance is a much better usage of it. that is much better than having to glance down at the NAV screen.

So while HUD may not be worth it, DRCC is a great option. Almost eerie to drive with that but works great.

 

They'd save energy, but if they're not as bright as the headlights the energy savings are not worth it to me.
