Has anyone installed any 6x9" speakers on the front doors? I have seen numerous posts where people have custom fabricated 6" adapters to make a regular 6" speaker fit in the 6x9" hole in the front doors. I would rather just add a speaker that fits. Is this possible? I am looking at these: Alpine SPS-609 Type-S 6"x9" 3-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com I'm not sure what top-mount depth: 3-1/16" is can anyone educate me? Thanks.
See owners manual. 3-1/16" from bottom of mount flange. http://a248.e.akamai.net/pix.crutchfield.com/Manuals/500/500SPS609.PDF Are you eliminating the on dash squawker?
Thanks for the link to the pdf. I was going to start with just the four new speakers and leave the two factory squawkers. I may install new ones if I can find some that fit. Anyone know how much room there is for speakers in the front doors?
The factory speakers are 3-1/6", but it has it's own standoff. Measured top mount is 1-9/16" (depth) . Just measured. Friendly here is to read up on Spidermans Sticky. I would not recommend this Alpine 3-way as a direct replacement. You will see what I mean.
No, but for what you are thinking of doing only, your front door replacement should be a woofer only of 4Ω. Seriously, I have just a little experience with this, and many others here. See my Gallery. Study up first. Here is your 2010 Prius II factory wiring diagram. All speakers are 4Ω. http://priuschat.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=34364&stc=1&d=1327365942
Checked out your Album, that is some in depth customization you did! Nice. Thanks for the speaker dimensions. I am looking but have not yet seen anything in a 6x9 with less than a 3" top mount. I may end up having to make my own adapters as you did for the front and then use the infinity slim 6" speakers.
Comments if you are replacing speaker only. Replace the front door and squawker together with a matched component 2 or 3 way. Lot of reading hear for that, and many places the cross-over can be placed. If you leave the squawker, there is an issue with the diode soldered to it and freq separation. It really is pretty easy to access it, just take your time. Replacing the aft speakers are pretty straight forward, just decide if want a woofer only or a coax. Crutchfield of some other suppliers offer adapters for and some stand offs. I just preferred MDF myself. Also consider using the same brand and series speakers front and back. Speakers, like people, have what I call an accent. New Yorkers or Southerners just sound better with their own. If you plan to change HU or add an amp later, consider speakers of higher wattage. The factory HU Watts and ohms are shown in the attachment. Stay with 4Ω. One last thing, you may loose some bass going 6x9 to 6-1/2" round in front. The factory door speakers are just cheap woofers. Actually the prius speakers are just crap, as you already know. Wait untill you see them. Most important thing is match everything electrically and remember it is a system. http://priuschat.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=34398&stc=1&d=1327456874
There wasn't a diode on my stock squawkers. There was a bass blocker capacitor with a cross over of about 6k Hz.
I did not replace anything yet. More than likely I will just go buy 6.5 inch infinity speakers on amazon. If I do get the 6 x 9 speakers then I will definitely post my findings.
What about this one? The mounting depth is 3 1/16" (sorry, I didnt get what frodoz was saying about the whole mounting depth thing.. but there's a review from a Prius owner.. although he doesnt say if he went through a lot of work to get them to fit or if they dropped it or what) http://www.amazon.com/dp/product/B002CIU78I?tag=priuschatcom-20's the review: [5 stars] 6X9 infinity, November 27, 2011 By Frank Klink (Phoenix, Az, US) - See all my reviews Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?) This review is from: Infinity Reference 9632cf 6x9-Inch, 300-Watt High Performance Two-Way Loudspeaker (Pair) (Electronics) Installed the 6X9 infinity 9632cf in a 2010 Prius replacing the OEM 6X9's. I was quite surprised in the overall improvement in fidelity, especially in the low frequency range. Bass response had good extension and performed well at high levels. This is an excellent choice for car audio.
Just to update, I found an old post from toyolover who had the infinity 6x9s installed http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...all-canadian-premium-package.html#post1063530 http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...eginning-really-luv-my-jbl-2.html#post1068261 looks like he did have to make a new stand off?
Just to share how I installed my 6x9 Infinity 9633cf. Here's the speakers Infinity Reference 9633cf 6"x9" 3-way car speakers at Crutchfield.com I was able to reuse the original connector so I only had to solder connections behind the speakers. There is still a .5inch gap behind the speaker between the magnet and the window so I could have sanded the front of the OEM openning to push the speakers back a bit. With this Infinity and how the tweeters sticking out, there's a dimple on the door speaker cover as in pic. I do like the upgraded sound with more details and clarity. Bass has improved. I plan to do some insulating to the back of OEM opennings to give a tighter bass sound when I do the same replacement to the rear. I don't know if others have went this rout before me. Oh, and I have an update Ottonavi HU.
Brilliant! I'll do mine the same way. I think I'll take a few mm off with the Dremel though. It's hard to see but how did you attach the screws?
Thanks. I actually just checked out my amazon order with shipping for Friday delivery. I hope to install the speakers this weekend. I ordered Infinity Reference 6032si for the back and Infinity Reference 9632cf for the front.
I was considering the Infinity speakers, but after some searching I decided to go with the Alpine set with the newer and smaller neodymium magnets to help with the installation depth. I'm going to work on my install this weekend as well. I'll try to snap some more pictures. -Sam
