Sales of the Volt, totaled 603 last month, fewer than half the 1,529 sold in December.

This Battery Fires story is killing sales ....
Looks like a modified Volt, specific to Calif is ready for release in March same time as the new PIP. They will both qualify for Carpool lane stickers!

GM last year said it hoped to sell 45,000 Volts in the U.S. this year.

The modification they did was not to intense. Just added a smog pump in to the exhaust system. Helping my friend work on his Z06 Vette we found his (he ripped it off accidentally after the car bottomed out on a dip while driving to fast).. I never knew what they were for until we had to fix his car. So all they did was put either a larger one, or a second one on the Volt to bring the emissions in line. Would be easy enough to modify a current Volt, but unfortunately on paper it still would not qualify. Be interesting to see if GM has some kind of program for that.

On a side note we have HOV's here in Norfolk. They are just as congested as the main roads so I do not even bother to use them. Granted the Volt does qualify to use them here currently regardless. I just enjoy my music, and hang out for the ride. More traffic = less electricity uses in 90% of my cases anyway. Like today I sat in tunnel traffic for over a hour and a half today (6 car pile up), and used only 4.6kwh on my 20 mile drive as opposed to my normal 4.8-5.0. Not a big difference but over time it adds up. So the more traffic the merrier for me. Hope HOV's are better in CA.

....we don't use the HOV's either in North Virginia but they exist may help some people, and may account for all the Prii here. Key question for the future would be the HOT lane construction project on the DC/VA Beltway. If they allow Prii/Volt that might be interesting. Otherwise will need HOV-3 or Toll.

...would think getting Volt in CA HOV lanes is important for sales.
