For what it will cost I'd recommend just buying a portable DVD player for your son - you should be able to get one for under $75. Besides having to modify your car you would open yourself up to potential legal issues if you get into an accident while a DVD is playing and you could wind up with a ticket if a cop were to notice while you were driving. The bonus - have your son wear headphones and you will not have to listen to the movie while you drive.

 

You need to bypass the parking brake for an after-market in-dash DVD player. You'd better
buy a car DVD player portable for your son

So let me get this straight, the factory head unit on a Prius v with ATP can play DVD. What's the process to get the DVD to play and display the video on the screen?

 

Without the modification that I mentioned above, the car must have the parking break on to watch DVD. Or be in just the "accessory" mode.

The DVD would be inserted into the slot and the functions would work from the DVD tab.

The above modification is supposed to allow for watching DVDs on the screen while driving and also for inputting NAV locations while driving. These features are normally not available due to a NAV lockout feature.

 

Place a DVD in the unit..put on the parking brake and go to the DVD tab and hit play..then select FULL screen and enjoy while parked only..

The video blanks out if the vehicle is in motion..dvd audio continues over your speakers, however..maybe useful on my old Pink Floyd DVD's...hmmm

Looks very doable. I won't be implementing that on my nav lock override at this moment but will in the future batch.
One more thing, does the video still stay on if you drive less than 5mph with parking brake on?

Uhm... Probably not... But I think that is a pretty good way to really trash your brakes and possibly the transmission.

 

Yes the DVD Video does stay on under 5MPH with the Parking brake on..

However, even if you were able to hack the system to enable video while moving ....the angle of the screen makes it almost impossible to view from the rear seats..so it would not be good for little ones in the back seat..

I found a really good and cheap (affordable) alternative. Check out these iPAD/DVD holders for the rear seat...I bought TWO and the kids LOVE them..

I'm not talking about constantly operating the vehicle in that condition. I'm simply curious to know if the DVD would still be playing if the vehicle stays under 5mph with the parking brakes on. Since CactusHybrid confirmed, the signal going into the headunit that allows DVD playback can be replicated and fed into the headunit. With the correct signals fed into the headunit, it doesn't matter what speed the vehicle is traveling, the DVD will play.
A few seconds of driving 2mph with the parking brake light lit (not even the hard enough to click) is not going to hurt anything. You'll do more damage braking from 60-0 one time than driving a few seconds with the parking brake lights on.

 

Please post your experience with this once you have it. I would be interested to see if it lives up to its expectations.

Can you kindly confirm if this will work to enable DVD playback for the C3 models that have the Nav screen. Have been unable to confirm thus far if it has the ability to play DVDs. Also, any idea if avi/mpg files can be played back via the USB? Thinking out loud here, perhaps an intune hack is in order...
