Prius Plug-in Hybrid Gets Improved 95 MPGe Rating

Great news! 95 MPGe on electricity (perhaps with some gas blended) and then 50 MPG on regular gas!

(ok so I still DO hope Volt cuts their high price so thay can survive) . . . . now THAT's what I call eating GM's $40,000 lunch.

Actually the Volt MPGe is 95/93, for an average of 94 which is one lower than the newly revised Prius PHV number.. So the Prius will be more efficient in EV mode and much better in CS mode, which is good. (I never understood why they were only at 87mpge for EV).

...couple of thoughts
1) Need to get that 95 MPGe figure on the PC home page when we get a chance (says 87)

2) Does the 95 figure include some gaso, and if so does that suggest the 100% EV value for PiP is well >100 MPGe? Believe some here had speculated that PiP 100% EV value might be >110 MPGe before the 87 came out, which was a little bit of a bummer.

Yea, they are saying 15 miles on pure electric. The Japanese Prius PHV need 3kWh from the wall for a full charge so it came out 200 Wh/mi. That translates to 169 MPGe pure electric.

The 95 MPGe seem to be a blend of electric and gas on EPA cycle.

 

It still says 87 on toyota's page. lol. It likely uses less gasoline than the one they tested at 87 mpge Why don't we wait until Toyota actually releases epa numbers, these should have real us tested kwh and gasoline usage.

this is how Toyota operates - underpromises and then overdelivers. Same was for CTh and Prius v original MPG estimates and they went up for official estimates.

Unlike some manufactures that claimed Volt will get how much mpg again?

 

I don't recall GM ever putting out a press release claiming the production Volt would get 50 mpg on only gasoline. The 50 mpg figure is something that might have been said as part of the concept show car back in January 2007 and it was once mentioned as a target aspiration by a Volt engineer in a website Q&A session. Excited enthusiasts took that offhand comment and ran with it.... I would be interested in seeing GM press releases that show otherwise.

 

I'd like to see the mpg split to see whether it differs from the liftback.

The LEAF is 340 wh/mile in EPA testing. If the PiP blows away the competition in efficiency at 300 wh/mile, a full charge of 15 EV miles will require 4.5 kwh. That works out to 86% DoD.

 

The 230 was because GM did estimates based on the EPA formulas that were "applicable" at the time. The EPA realized they were silly and needed fixed, and then Gm could not really say anything until the new procedures were finalized.

GM's 230 mpg was based on a calc *GM* hoped to foist on EPA, but was rejected.

Forgive me, but I don't understand the math in your signature. If your electricity was from wind power, how do you get total fuel costs for 5.6 gals of premium gas of $56.42?

For real numbers consider the prius PHV production model when 26.4 km (16.4 mi) EV miles in JC-08.

To put it in perspective, Nissan LEAF consumes 120Wh/km in JC-08 mode and achieved 200km. in EPA The leaf is 340wh/mile and 73mile range, i.e. the EPA test needed 2.8x times more energy/mile and only went 62% of the distance.

Adjusting from jc08 for the PHV, it looks like 10.17 miles, not 15, but we have to wait and see for real.


So when EPA comes out < 15, will people still be saying Toyota under promises and over delivers?

Not really.. the costs the combined price for gas (~18.5 if I remember right) + electricity (including fees) of about $38.

I don't make my own wind power, I buy it. My base rate for off-peak is $.049/kwr.

Gas here is now down to 2.81 (3.00 for premium), but I used the price I paid when I filled up.
