Hey guys - as you can tell from the title I finally got snagged for my tint. The officer pulled out his meter, and the front window read out 12.9% which is well below the legal limit (32%) here. The ticket, according to the county that I was pulled over in, is apparently $154.00 dollars. However, under section 32-5C-7 of the Alabama legislature it quotes "A person who violates this chapter is guilty of a misdemeanor and for a first conviction thereof shall be punished by a fine of not more than one hundred dollars ($100)" So, am I being fined more than I should? I can't call and ask about the ticket yet, because it's not in the system yet. Any comments or input? Also, no, I am not tearing off the tint. They can ticket me 10 times and I'll still leave it on.

It honestly wouldn't be worth my time. Plus, if I did fight it in court I would have to drive an hour and a half away to the county in which I got the ticket and miss 3 classes that morning. I'm just going to ask when my ticket is eventually entered into the system. I was just wondering if anyone had an idea. I just hope it's not a "fix-it" ticket. I don't think it is. Anyone have any more input? If not, I'll just wait till I can ask questions.

The $154 might be the $100 plus some kind of penalty assessment or some court related fee. I'm not sure when it started happening (or maybe I just started noticing it) but in California there's the fine plus some kind of extra assessment they tack on.

And I doubt its a fix-it.. the fine would seem kind of steep (especially for a first-time offender) for a fix-it.. I dont know what your ticket looks like, but in my neck of the woods, there's usually a checkbox next to the infraction that says something like "correctable" or "non-correctable". If it is correctable, that would make it a fix-it ticket.

And you thought about going darker? ;)

It's a fix-it in many places. No idea about your jurisdiction but you should find out, as just paying the fine alone can have ramifications.

The other $54 could be some kind of processing fees.

I'm thinking you're right. I think it is actually $100, but the additional $54 is court fees. I've heard about the correctable or non-correctable boxes and such, and I don't have one on my ticket. I'm pretty sure I can just give them the money and be on my way. Thanks for your input!
Haha I still am, actually! If I'm going to get tickets I may as well have it as dark as I want to.. However, nah - I won't be going darker. If anything, I'll double up the rear windows. Thanks for your input as well, I appreciate it.
Hey now, legal doesn't look near as good as non-legal! White car with black windows looks excellent in my opinion. I guess I'm willing to pay the price, I don't have any other choice if I want to keep the tint! :dizzy:

Ouch is right as this would pertain to me as well:eek:. Pardon me as I'm out of date but when did they start charging fines for tint, I always thought & experienced it to be a fix-it & is it same in all socal counties?

We'll see if you can afford it:

    2nd violation - $200 and/or 30 days in the slammer

3rd violation - $500 and/or 3 fun months with Bubba and his bad breath

I think you now have the choice. The last time I was pulled over for tint was in the mid 90s but it was just a fix-it ticket (sign off and send back with like $10 fee).

I know a few years ago, I had heard that you now had the "option" of either getting it fixed or paying a fine. I found this post on another forum from Dec 2010 (coincidentally also a Prius) where the guy said the ticket was $190 or he could remove the tint and get it signed off. I also found another reference from Oct 2009 on some kind of law forum where these two options are mentioned as well. Also, as 32K kind of alluded to, each infraction you get after the 1st one will have a higher fine amount. I heard that is true, but I googled for it but just cant seem to find anything related to the fine amount in California.

I will add one more thing and that is, in my experience, it really depends a lot on what kind of car you're driving, what it looks like (lowered, big wheels), and where you are. Down in South OC, you don't really get hassled too much for tint and front plate UNLESS a cop WANTS to hassle you for it.

I went just one step darker than the legal limit. It's 35% in Oregon & Washington but I put on 28%. I like to leave the sunshade open so it lets some light shine in & make the tint look lighter so I never get bothered by the police. :D

Of course that is your right, just realize that the penalties and fines increase with subsequent tickets now that you are "in the system".

Glad to hear the cops are doing there jobs ! At least in Alabama. They should confiscate the cars with any vision inhibiting
    tints.

Regarding the cost of that ticket: it is possible that there is a city or county ordinance in force as well, which you may well have been fined under. Check your ticket to see what the specific citing was for. That might account for the extra $$

Thank you, everyone, for replying to my thread. I'm fully aware that I had darker tint than the law when I got it put on my car - and I'm also fully aware that I could be ticketed at any time. I was just curious as to where those extra $54 dollars came from - but it does look like it is court fees of some sort. The main reason I got pulled over was because as I was going down a very, very large mountain - a officer was waiting at the bottom for people who didn't want to use their breaks (me). I got clocked for going 78 in a 65. The officer let me go on the speeding, but he noticed that my windows were dark. So, I think, if I had not been speeding down the steep hill I wouldn't have been pulled over afterall. If I get another ticket, I'm not sure what I'll do. However - I have expensive audio equipment in the hatch area of the car and the tint keeps people from seeing that, preventing it from being stolen. That's one of the MAJOR reasons I want to keep the dark tint, besides the other various reasons one has it put on their car. Thank you guys. Everyone who posts in my threads gets a "thanks!"

Don't let the county that ticketed you find out you're willing to pay the fines and leave it on as you could become a ca$h cow for them!

I got ticketed for tint 3 times in SoCal in the late 80s or early 90s and it was a fix it ticket then and I had the tint reinstalled and gave up after the 3rd time. I even tried the sunroof open trick but it didn't work.

You're definitely right. However, the county in which I was issued the ticket is about 1-2 hours from where I live and go to school. The problem with stripping the tint off and getting it put back on to avoid the large fine is this: I got my tint put on in my hometown about 2 hours away. I wouldn't want anyone else tearing off my tint except the very experienced guy who put it on. So, after I drove 2 hours to my hometown to put it on, I would have to drive another 3 to the county to the courthouse which would make me miss 3 classes of school and take up valuable time. Not to mention, the cost of ripping off the tint and re-applying fresh tint after showing the judge would cost more than just paying the ticket straight up. I doubt I would have got stopped, but he got me for speeding initially. Thanks for your insight.

Not specific to tint, but in this area, court costs and fees are often much greater than the fine. All of the court cases are in the paper (there are only 21,000 people in 2,500 square miles), and I often see where someone is fined $45 and ends up paying $500 by the time all of the other costs are rolled in. Personally, I think the costs and fees should be part of the fine.

Glad to hear the cops are doing their jobs ! At least in Alabama.
Next, they should start impounding all cars with vision inhibiting extra dark tints.
