Hi everyone- I am looking to purchase a used 04-08 Prius. I am hoping a few simple questions of mine can be answered-

    1. Packages
I have been told to have bluetooth, the car needs to have navigation. I have also been told that bluetooth comes with the JBL stereo package. Is there a chart that shows what packages have what, as well as visual cues to know if a car has bluetooth or not? perhaps its a steering wheel button?
    2. iPhone integration
Any specific things to consider? I want to get in car, plug in iphone via data cable, and be able to control via steering wheel controls. Do I need a JBL stereo with the DICE controller?
    3. Heat
How is the heat when the car is in electric mode? I am in upstate NY with very cold winters.
    4. Remote start
Is this possible? I would think the ICE would not run while idleing?
    5. Fair market value
Is it possible to find a 06+ with HID, BT, Smart key, under 75K, and all maintenance up to date for under $8500?

I purchased the '08 model back in November last year and before I got it I looked through the Toyota Used Car pages to find out what each of the different models came with.
I have the T Spirit and it comes with all the bells and whistles.
I have the JBL sound system, Sat Nav and bluetooth. You can make and receive calls on the steering wheel control as well as using the voice activation.
I have connected my iphone via a 3.5mm jack plug so can only listen to music and not control the phones functions (you can put phone numbers in the inbuilt address book and call from there)
When you use the EV button your heating and cruise control turn of although the fan still works blowing cold air round.
During the icy periods over Christmas leave I powered up my car and left it running to defrost. The petrol engine will run while idling if you have the heating on in the car, all you need to press is the front windscreen button on the steering wheel. The '08 prius has an electric rear window heater but uses the air con to defrost the front windscreen.
I don't live in the states but I purchased my '08 Prius with 35000 miles on the clock for £10500
I don't know if the models differ by country, I hope this helps :)

Hi. I paid $10K in the spring of 2011 for my 04 with all the bells and whistles...nav pkg, bt, etc.
with 55k miles. You might be able to find an 06 for 8500 from a private owner. An 06 with the nav pkg is the first year with back up camera I think. I am upstate as well Syracuse NY.

I have a '04 and to the best of my recollection...

    1) to get BT you do have to have Nav. There are two different JBL stereo systems, one with and one without the built in NAV. To be sure the care has BT, look on steering wheel for the telephone buttons (one to initiate one to hang up).

    2) at least on the 2004, there was no built in plug for iPods/phones, for some reason Toyota only offered that on one or two Scions that year. I beleive an aux jack was added in 2006, but for full control, that would have to be an aftermarket addition. Of which there were several companies making units. Some integrate better than others.

    3) you aren't going to run electric on a cold car with the heat running, it will run the engine to get that heat. My mileage on my original commute was slightly worse in winter, partially deu to this I beleive. But car can heat up pretty quickly.

    4) was availible as a dealer installed option starting in '06 I believe. To get it on an earlier one, you had to go aftermarket. The dealer one availible in '06 could not, at least not officially, be installed on an '04 or '05 - no idea why. As for ICE going during idle, depends on state of hybrid battery charge, weather, engine cold or warm, heat settings, etc.

    5) no idea on pricing, try looking at KBB.com, and/or NADA.com for prices in your area.

fwiw at least in my area when i was looking over the past couple months, 100k gen ii for < 10k that was well taken care of and in good shape was hard to find, even on the private market.

06 and up have better nav screens and they only introduced aux input from 06+. If you want full integration for ipod and/or sat and dont care about aux i put then stick to 04 and 05 for better prices. However 04s had a known tsb for mfd screens that would fail - they can be repaired for ~300 or replaced with refurb for about 900 or new for a few grand (parts only).

also i believe for 04 and 05 bluetooth and nav were all or nothing - if you had one you had the other. 06 and up some packages had bluetooth without nav.

In the US, we don't have trims called T-Spirit or anything like that.

The links at http://priuschat.com/forums/newbie-forum/100759-buying-first-prius.html#post1427516 should help the OP.

Pretty much everything you list above applies to the US models except that the US models prior to the model year 2010 never got an EV button. As for "petrol engine will run while idling if you have the heating on in the car", well yes/no. If coolant temp (FWT on Scanguage II) is <=145 F and heat is on hi w/fan above off, then the ICE will run to provide requested cabin heat. If FWT is >145 F, ICE will not and doesn't run to provide requested cabin heat.

Yep, aux input was new to the 06. Yep 04-05 Priues might have a problematic MFD.

I have an 08' that has blue tooth and no nav. At least I guess it doesn't have nav?.....If I hit the map button on the steering wheel it says on the screen "external hardware not hooked up" or something like that. Can someone help me with this possibly? Actually I must not because my window sticker does not list nav. I have package #4 with bluetooth, jbl, sat radio, backup cam etc etc... and a hyper chiahuahua that keeps jumping on my laptop as I type this...grrrrrrrr..... No nav though:(

Is it safe to say that on a 2004/2005 prius, if it does not have Nav, then it does not have Bluetooth?

Then going up to 2006+, it may not have nav, but if it does have JBL then it has bluetooth? Where would the buttons be on the steering wheel?

hmm...well, my steering wheel has a "map" function with no nav so I'm not so sure I would just go by what's on the steering wheel. If someone looking to buy a prius wanted nav and jumped in my car and saw a screen and a "map" button on the steering wheel they might assume it had nav but in fact it doesn't. It's kind of decieving in that way so be carefull. The bluetooth works great. I love it. My steering wheel has a "voice activation" button, "make call" button and "end call" button on the right side of the steering wheel. This may be a good clue that it in fact has bluetooth but I wouldn't be sure without playing around with it a little:)

That's not a good list to go by for all 2nd gens. For instance, IIRC, cruise control was standard on all Priuses until model year 08, where it got broken out. Backup camera, factory leather, and aux input jack weren't available until model year 06.

There were 8 packages for 06. I have package 7 aka package NL.

OP should really go by http://priuschat.com/forums/knowled...andard-optional-equipment-some-countries.html, which I have a link to from one of my earlier posts. I believe there are a few mistakes in the above equipment list (e.g. cassette deck was ditched starting with model year 06). One can confirm for sure by model year by looking at the brochures at http://priuschat.com/forums/knowled...al-equipment-some-countries-2.html#post612688.

I had to replace the MFD on a 2006 with nav. That was not an inexpensive part at all. Even the junkyard replacement was $500. A dealer reman would have been $1400.

I have a 2007 Package 4 with bluetooth and JLB stereo, but no navigation. Navigation in a Gen II Prius can get pretty icky reviews depending on who you ask. Yes, my car has bluetooth steering wheel buttons.

Not entirely sure but it's not included in any package that I know of. Might be able to install this as an aftermarket alteration.

Eh, that's debatable. You're lucky you're in NY because Prii are MUCH cheaper there than anywhere else in the northeast. I'm in PA and my car, which was a 2007 with 72k cost $12500 at a Toyota dealership. I would effectively knock off $2000-3000 if you're in NY. There just must be a surplus there, although I've also been told that car companies often make slightly different versions of cars, including Prii, for your state. Don't know why. Still, to get one for your price range, you're going to have to look long and hard.

    Good luck!

I looked long and hard for an 06+ w/ <100kmiles for under $10000 and struck out. Every one I found under $10k was pretty well beat up, was usually an 04 or 05 and had over 100kmiles. I have noticed the prices coming down lately but, I still think you would be hard pressed to find one with all those options in your price range. After much searching, I ended up purchasing an 06 w/ 100,5XX miles, no BT, No HID for $10,008 (out the door). That was the best deal (in my opinion) I could find.

The way I figure it, depending on how you drive, the engine only runs about 80-90% of the time (my guess, real data may be more or less???) so if my assumption is right, a Prius with 100,000 miles on it will have about the same engine run time as a regular car with ~80 or 90,000 miles. Of course this is not scientific but, there is merit to the general point.

I have found the Prius to be one of the most reliable and low maintenance cars on the market (and that is scientific). My '06 drives like brand new (and looks brand new). Hopefully you can find a similiar deal.

I have an '04 with <60K miles, recently purchased. Would like to swap out the MFD for an '06 with BT, Nav, BU camera. Can buy the MFD and BU camera on ebay for not too much. Any tips or pointers on this install? Thinking about replacing steering wheel for buttons as well (not required but might be nice to have).
