Is there a place to buy a cubby subwoofer/enclosure?

I've read on an audio forum, that yellow-top optima batteries aren't happy with any type of deep cycle or heavy draws.

 

Wow, what a difference using the right equipment makes. Well I got another layer on the sub enclosure. I made a booth out of 6mil plastic with an exhaust fan. I also get a 3M respirator of auto painting and I didn't even smell the fumes at all. The booth keep the fumes out of the rest of the house... so it was a great day.

So now I got to think about the face. It appears that Tim used rings and position with dowels? Did you use fabric from the rings to the body and glass that?

I use dowels, sticks, whatever I can find to hot glue the rings into position. I stretch and superglue (hobby store glue and accelerator) polyester fabric, ponte, over the rings and to the perimeter of the trimmed fiberglass enclosure - as tight as you can, no wrinkles. I start on the sharp corner and stretch to the opposite, then the others corners. A second set of hands would be great. then I split section section in half and work towards the corners.



Glue around the perimeter of the rings, as well. Then start resin, and if it's tight like a drum, a couple layers of resin. I usually push down into the rings to glue them, it helps pull it tighter.

 

I might have time to do one this week. If I do, I'll try to take some photos.

 

Thanks Tim, that would be great. Probably do the rings next weekend and perhaps the glass. Need to get another quart of resin as I messed up this morning. I didn't half the quart but rather put the cat in the entire quart. Had to work fast but managed to get two more layers set.

It is looking good and feeling solid.

 

Well the shell pretty much dried and I peeled the tape off. Most of it came will little effort, I was surprised. The tin-foil appears to scrap off easy.

Very happy with how things are going so far.

 

A little more progress. Got the "rings" built and secured to the back. Next will be the fabric to create the face. So far so good. The attached photo show the speaker fastened to the rings.

Got the fabric attached to the shell. Plan to glass it tomorrow.

 

sweet. when you glass it, add layers to the whole thing so it's around 1/4" thick.

 

Around the outside?

Well I got the resin on and the fabric took it really well... didn't slump. Should I just build up on the fabric or should I add mat to the surface?

The only part that is close to a 1/4" in the base. The rest about an 1/8" I guess if it rattles I could always add layers through the speaker hole. Would applying stuff like dynamat on the inside work as well?

What filler is everyone using? Hertz recommends using Fonofoam. Can't see to find any in the US. I was going to try using good ol fiberglass insulation as that seems to be the nod on the web.

 

Polyester fiber-fill (pillow stuffing) works well...you can pick some up at WalMart or any fabric store. Do not pack it full, rather loosely fill the enclosure.

 

1/8" isn't thick enough. It will deflect when that Hertz gets moving. Absolutely used mat over the fabric. Again, I'd bet 6-8 layers with the bubbles rolled out, then add at least 3 more layers around the back of it to stiffen it all up. There's no need to use dynamat inside.

Pillow stuffing works well.

 

If I add layers around the back, won't that cause it not to fit? It already is a tight fit in the cubby.

ohhhh, I laid mine up when it was hot, which allowed it to shrink. This is what I wanted. So, my plug is undersized, making the mold undersized, allowing more layers when I mated the face to the enclosure back on production pieces. I've also started adding black pigment to these outer layers so I don't have to mess with black paint.

 

Any updates Spidey? I am waiting patiently...sorta

 

Thanks for asking... I have a little update. I was able to apply three layers of mat on the face and another on the inside all around and a layer of resin around the outside of the shell. That is just going to have to be enough... I am done glassing!

I still have a little wait though, I ordered the wiring terminals from parts-express and they shipped it uber slow-boat (fed-x). Should be here Thursday. :rockon:

p.s. it has been about a month since I started this, and my car still smells like fiberglass.

 

....just a little FYI:

For those of you having the same difficulty as I have had with locating one of the Hertz speakers, my stereo installer gave me a Kicker Comp 10 (Item 10C104), a 4 Ohm woofer that looks cool, also, that he said would work just as well in the enclosure. He swapped me out of a couple of other JBL speakers that I didn't need any longer (been sitting in a closet for years) in exchange for the Kicker. In case anyone wants to go another route! The speaker has yellow detail, and yellow "stitching" work around the edges.....and yellow is one of my FAVORITE colors of cars (have had several).....so I'm all happy now!
