Tire wear - how many miles are people getting on their stock tires?

I would guess it to be some combination of

1) Tire Pressures run - Mine are at Max PSI.

2) Type of driving - Mine is mostly highway, thus there isn't too much stop and go, 90 degree turns, and other things that you would see in lower speed city driving.

 

I thought that when I needed to get new tires, I would get the Michelin MXM4 because they are LRR. I assumed those would be get better MPG since the Bridgestones were not LRR. You say you get about the same MPG?

 

Just hit 71,000 miles on my stock tires, avid s33. Bought this prius new in April of 2011. I'm a courier, and the majority of these miles are highway miles, ... maybe that has helped.

 

My stock tires wore out in about 33k. I was told that because of regenerative brakes, the tires are subject to wear from acceleration and braking both, so they really need to be rotated every 5k. My stock tires seemed to be subject to flats also. I switched to a set of Michelins, which lasted until 76k, but which turned out not to be LRR (low rolling resistance) tires, so mileage droped 3-4 mpg. Now running Toyo Versado Eco tires, which are a true LRR. So far, so good--and noticeably quieter than the previous tire.

 

BZZZZT! Salescritter FUD. Your Prius doesn't do any more braking than does a non-hybrid. And if you actually do most of your braking in regen mode instead of friction mode, you are applying less braking stress to the tires than is the average driver.

 

I had the Toyo Proxes A20 215/45R17 on my Prius. Got to 60,000 miles before replacing them with Michelin Primacy MXM4s. Drove mostly highway (80/20 hwy/city) so that might have a factor into the wear and tear.

 

Just passed 49,000 miles on stock ECOPIA's (15"). Service writer at dealership didn't think I would make it pass 35,000 miles. Still have good tread on tires. Mostly highway miles.

 

It always amazes me how US drivers seem to get amazingly high mileage out of tyres. I don't think I've ever, in 13 years of driving, got more than 30k miles out of a tyre. Fronts even less.

Must be the road surfaces in the UK.

I run with pressures at or slightly greater than the door frame stickers as well.

I will get 100,000 miles out of the stock tires. I have 73,000 on the car now. I rotate the stock tires and rims with snow tires. I am ok driving in the summer with the stock tires until there is no tread left. I never use snow tires more than three seasons.

 

100k!!! Incredible. Are sure you aren't running on the rims rather than rubber?

 

LOL --- Funny, isn't it -- one guy says he can't get 20k out of a set and one says he gets 100k

 

He ISN'T getting 100K out of ONE set of tires. He alternates between his "regular" tires and snow tires. He is driving 100K
over a period of time but using two sets of tires to do it.

Are you sure? He said 100k 'out of the stock tires'. Not between the snows and the stocks. He may have meant that of course...

Yes, I have seen several posters say they have gotten 60,000+ miles out of their OEM Yokohama Avid S33D tires and have wondered how they do this.

I take really good care of my tires, rotate every 5,000 miles, check the pressure every weekend, adjust pressure for summer to winter temperature swings, run mine at 40/38. 80% of my driving is highway driving at 60-70 mph.

I was only able to get 31,000 miles out of mine. They had 4/32 tread depth left and I could have gotten a few more miles out of them. They were all wearing evenly and no unusual wear patterns. The car has always tracked straight and true from day one.

I am typically able to get the full warranty mileage out of a set of Michelin tires. So, I would really like to know how others are able to get so much more mileage than me.

 

That is what I said. 100K on the stock tires.

I put 300,005 miles on my last vehicle and did the same thing. I never let the snow tires get older than 3 year but the stock I run almost bald. I only use them in the summer and I know it will affect my ability to stop. I drive a lot of highway miles.

I am cheap. That is why I bought the Prius.

I have the Ecopia stock tires and I am at 42,000 miles. I stopped into Discount Tire a few weeks ago and asked them to measure the tread and if I remember correctly they are about 6 or 7 32nds, and the guy thought I could easily get 8,000-10,000 more miles out of them. I suspect I will have to/want to replace them going into the 2012/2013 winter.
