Is it possible to replace the HV battery of my 2002 Prius with the Gen. 2 HV battery (04-09). Also, does the Gen. 1 Prius HV battery have the same warranty as the Gen. 2 (150,000 mile warranty)?
No, the Gen1 battery has 38 modules and the Gen2 Battery has only 28 modules (and lower voltage). You can replace the modules in a Gen1 battery with Gen2 or Gen3 modules. That is what a good battery rebuilder does (see ReInVolt at Remanufactured Hybrid Vehicle Battery Packs) No, the earlier Prii had an 8 year/100,000 mile warranty (as did early Gen2 Prii like mine, Mine failed at 195,000 miles and was replaced with a ReInVolt battery). Rebuilt (and replacement HV batteries from Toyota) have a one year, unlimited mileage warranty. JeffD
Oh wow..195,000mi? was that with the original HV battery pack? I definitely have to look into ReInvolt. Thanks Jeff!
The Gen1 battery has a shorter expected life than the Gen2 battery since the modules were improved at the transition (and again improved for the Gen3). Yes the original HV battery lasted 195,000 miles in my 2004 Prius (as did the little 12v, which was a surprise). JeffD
JeffD: I had thought that ReInvolt was planning on buliding gen1 batteries with gen2 Cells. Is this correct?
