[APOLOGIES - in my haste, this landed in the Prius V forum, but it's all fixed now. Please don't tell Santa I goofed!]

    Greetings ladies and germs...

So I was just under the hood topping off the windshield washer fluid, pre-holiday roadtrip. There I stood, admiring the amazingness that is the hybrid powertrain (and anticipating explaining it to relatives - again), and I noticed a strange thing...

I was looking down into the space behind the inverter, at what I'm guessing is the main traction electric motor, and there's a deep threaded hole in the top of it, with nothing in it. It looks like it should have a bolt, or at least a plug/bung in it. I know this sounds like a very strange query, but is this normal? (Or, can you take a quick peek at your car and see if yours is the same...)

Here are two quick photos, with the hole in question circled in yuck-green. (Sorry for the off-focusness of the 2nd one, but the hole in question is about a foot below that bracket that's in focus.)

[photos got borked, so I put them in the reply...]

looks like a mounting hole for something. Doubt the hole extends all the way through.

That's where the supercharger gets bolted on, sorry, not really.

That's the electron fill hole. Every 35,000 miles you should change the electrons in the MGs, topping off in between if the level gets low. If you aren't finding electrons on the floor of your garage, you probably don't have a leak.

    ;)

    Tom

[ For those technically challenged, this reply is a joke. Please don't go out and look under your Prius for electrons. On the other hand, what the heck; go out there and take a look. Post pictures if you find any.]

One of my thoughts as well - perhaps for a lift-eye?

I have the same hole, but it's doesn't appear to be threaded.

That's for the turbo encabulator, but only on European models. Here's the video explaining how it works:

    from the video:
Now basically, the only new principle involved is that instead of power being generated by the relative motions of conductors and fluxes, it is produced by the modial interaction of magnetoreluctance and capacitive directance.

Oh no - synthetic electrons?!?! And I'd just ordered conventional ones. Do you know, does anyplace on the interwebs sell these? The dealer charges way too much!

    Well d'uh!
The hole through the engine represents the fastest route from the top of the engine to the bottom of the engine.

Seriously? No one figured that one out?

Two atoms are walking down the street when one is hit by a bus.

His friend is very concerned and rushes over crying "Are you OK?"

"No, I'm not, he says, I've lost an electron!"

Glancing up and down the street for stray subatomic particles, his friend asks, "Are you sure?"

    "Sure? Hell, I'm POSITIVE!"

Oh, THAT'S why my new Prius v Five doesn't have 17" wheels, it's a EURO model! I hope to hell the part where the manual explains how to operate the Turbo Encabulator is not in Swedish (as were the Thule Rack instructions for my Gen 2)!

    A couple weeks ago there was a Physicist on NPR commenting on a recent study which seemed to indicate neutrinos might, under certain circumstances, exceed the speed of light. This of course would open the door to time travel. He went on to note that since it was a single small study, about whose results he was dubious, its greatest impact was to make plausible the following joke;

The Bartender says "What'll you have"? and two Neutrinos walk into a bar.

Heisenberg is out for a drive (obviously in his early pre-pre-pre-production Prius) when he's stopped by a traffic cop. The cop says 'Do you know how fast you were going?' Heisenberg says 'No, but I know where I am.

If you aren't changing the filter too, big repair bills are in your future! You're also crazy for going past the factory recommended 20k interval. RTM!!!!!!!

I have the same fitting. I can see the bottom of it because my engine compartment is still clean, unlike the outside of the car after all the messy weather. BTW, it's a purge port for excess electron pressure.
