I have a Prius III 2011. I've had it for 10,000 miles and have had no problems at all. Yesterday, when I started the car, it made a loud rumbling and the engine shook, when it transitioned from the electric motor to the gas engine. It did that several times when I restarted and then went away. The problem happened on the transition each time. Electric motor came on perfectly and then ten seconds later it was like an earth quake under the hood. My dad watched the engine and said that it shook really hard. At first he thought it might be a fan belt but then he said it seemed more like water or something may have gotten into the gas tank and it was choking...anyone else had this problem?
Welcome to the club... many have experienced the issue though it has mainly been right at startup (of the gas engine). There is a huge thread on the issue. You should report this to the dealership so at least it has been documented.
Thanks. Yes my noise happens right as the gas engine starts up. When I start my car it is in electric mode for about 10 seconds then it switches to gas and that's when the noise happens. I'm taking it to the dealer today and I'll report it.
Had you started the car and shut it down just as the gas engine fired up prior to starting the car up where you had the engine shaking event? It didn't have to be immediately prior (like seconds) just on the previous start up, did you power it down as the engine came on? In both instances where I've had this happen, it was because I was moving my car a short distance (driveway to the front of the house) and I powered off the car as the gas engine turned on. The next time I powered up the car, the gas engine had that horrible knocking noise.
2011 Prius with loud rattling motor noise as well as what seems to be the engine shaking. Engine light on as well. Took it to the shop - diagnosis = Misfiring. Replaced spark plugs - problem fixed for a day or two. Had to return to the shop because the problem resurfaced. Same diagnosis of Misfiring - Fuel system cleaned. Problem corrected for about a week. Rattling, shaking and engine light returned. I've been using premium gas thinking I need to burn hotter fuel. HELP!!!
Avoid the shop. Since plugs were changed, you now know it’s time clean your intake manifold and install a catch can. And welcome to the knock club, we’re always taking new members.
How many miles on it? How's the coolant level in the reservoir, stable, or regularly dropping? It could be the intake manifold is failing, or "just" EGR clogging. About neck-and-neck with death-and-taxes, is: Third Gen Exhaust Gas Recirculation (aka EGR) clog up. The smiplest way to see where you're at, is to check the degree of carbon build up in the EGR pipe, a stainless steel connecting pipe between the EGR valve and intake manifold. 210k miles on my 2011 Prius - I should probably get rid of it BEFORE I have to replace the $3500 batteries
??? That "warranty enhancement" has to do with rough starts caused by sticking EGR valve. Not related to battery.
Thanks - the mileage for this is 150k and I have 210k - but..................it's a direction to go in. Thanks so much.
I've had my Prius for over 6years and this happens almost everytime I shut it off before it goes back into electric mode...just make sure you let your car kick out of gas mode before turning it off and you should be fine.
