I haven't owned a Prius before, so please excuse the novice question.

Is it necessary to have a Scangauge for the Prius v or will any CAN OBD II Scanner work? What's the best to have for the Prius if you had to select one as of today?

From what I have read and understand there are no OBD II scanners currently available that will read all of the Prius specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTC).

The ScanGaugeII will read most, if not all, of the Prius specific DTC plus will allow you to change some of the Customizable Features that you would have to otherwise have the dealer do. There is also a spreadsheet of custom XGauges that you can configure to read a lot of the Prius hybrid system data such as HV battery voltage, temp, etc.
