We just traded our Gen II Prius for a new 2011 Prius. The previous Prius had the Smart Entry system on the passenger's door and rear deck in addition to the driver's door. The new Prius only has the Smart Entry system on the driver's door. Is it possible to add functioning Smart Entry door handles on the passenger's door and rear deck without tearing apart the dash and gutting the interior or doing major modifications to the wiring harnes?

    Thanks

There is a DIY thread on this. It looks like quite a bit of work. I may do the hatch sometime in the future.

Seems like it would be easier and cheaper just to press the unlock button on the key fob. I keep having to remind myself that mine has this feature, in addition to the 3 door touch entry.

You can program the driver's door touch to unlock all 5 doors. It is a compromise, but one we live with.

That mod you can do yourself, it's in the owners manual, and it's so easy even I did it and helps a great deal.

This is one area where the Gen2 is better than the Gen3

How so? The Gen 2 had standard remote keyless entry (you have to slot the fob into the dashboard) with optional 3-dr SKS.

The Gen 3 has standard 1-dr SKS with optional 3-dr SKS. For someone who buys the base model, that's an upgrade to SKS from remote keyless entry.

With the gen.2 pkg. 2 when you touched the drivers door or the trunk all the doors would open. What I don't like about the gen.3 pkg. 2 is when you have an arm full of stuff you can't touch the trunk to open you either have to fumble for the FOB or touch the drivers side door first to unlock the trunk.

Yep. Gen 2's choices were 0-door SKS (no SKS) or 3-door SKS.

On Gen 3, the choices are 1-door SKS or 3-door SKS.

    http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...-passenger-door-1-door-sks-gen-iii-prius.html was the DIY writeup.

    Ahh, poor baby.
    So buy a model 4 or 5.

Thanks to all. I think I will be doing the modification. As to getting a four or five package, my wife had to have the sun roof which, at least around these parts, rules out the two upper packages.

Then buy the Four (or in 2012, Three). Yes, I realise it's a higher package/model but that's how Toyota decided to market it - as a premium feature.

Per http://web.archive.org/web/20090609...a/toyota-announces-prices-for-2010-89249.aspx (prices are old), you could get the solar roof with model Four/4 (formerly IV). But, I don't know if the combination is available in your region.
