Blue Tooth phone compatability

It's actually going the other way. Newer devices pair with just about everything. It is more likely that your 'year old' GPS actually has 3-4 year old bluetooth chip... while the Prius probably has a much newer chip.

 

I have a Treo 850 and it does not connect to my Prius 2010. The dealer tried it and could not connect mine although he could connect / pair his Blackberry. He gave me a toyota URL that purported lists all cell phones it's compatible with ( toyota.letstalk.com ). When I return home, I'll contact them again and give it another try.

 

Phones do not have to be on list to pair up with Prius.
We both have Tracfones (Motorola) which are not on list
both hooked up and work fine. On Prius IV.

Note: This example is for Tracfone.You will have to find your phones ‘access code’ or ‘passkey’

In the car’s bluetooth settings screen there should be an entry called ‘access code’ or ‘passkey’; change the code offered up by the car’s bluetooth with 0000 and register noting the ‘device name’. Ignor any instuction to enter code into phone as the w376g is hard-coded with 0000 and the w376g won’t permit change to the code.
On the w376g access the ’settings’ menu selecting ‘bluetooth link’. Select ‘find me’, then on car select ‘audio devices’ and the screen should provide a menu listing the ‘device name’ for the car’s bluetooth noted earlier. Highlight and select the device name and pairing should begin.

I suspect neither Toyota nor letstalk.com actually tests phone compatibility, I think the list is based on compatibility reported by phone owners. Since the car has been available for a little over a month, the number of people exposed to the car is somewhat limited. This theory is based on the fact that some phones listed as compatible use virtually identical Bluetooth chips as other phones not on the list, phones made by the same manufacturer.

But as it stands now, the list of compatible phones is pretty short. For instance; I use Verizon Wireless. They list 89 compatible Verizon phones for my '05 Prius. The '10 Prius? Nine. And, I notice that the Palm Treo 850 isn't listed as compatible with the '05 Prius either. As there doesn't seem to be a single phone listed as compatible for the '10 that isn't on the list as compatible for the '05, I wouldn't expect it to work on the '10.

 

It took me 3 phones before I found one that works flawlessly (mostly) with the Blue Tooth in my Gen3 base-model Prius. It was a pain in the neck trying to work this through and dealing with Verizon, but now I am content and really like having Blue Tooth. (On a side note, buying phones on Verizon's website is by far the best way to go.)

Cell phones that work for me: LG VX5500 and LGVX5300

Cell phones that didn't work: Motorola E815 and Nokia 6205

 

My best guess is that the 2010 Prius that supports A2DP (audio streaming) can only be paired with cell phones that support it as well. Otherwise, the pairing would fail w/o specific message.

The cell phones you listed that "work for me" both supports A2DP.
The cell phones you listed that "didn't work" both lack A2DP support.

If this is true, choosing a cell phone that can pair with 2010 Prius is easy. Just read the spec of the cell phone at the BT section.
BT is a matured spec (@2.0), unlike the early days.
Most cell phone chips today use common IP blocks inside their chips.

 

While looking up my phone I stumbled on this site from Motorola. It lists just about every manufacturer.

Of course, this only suggests that the hardware is capable of A2DP. Your wireless carrier may have decided for you that you don't need it.

 

We have a 2007 Prius 5 and a 2010 Prius 5, both with Bluetooth handsfree adapters, and two cell phones: an LG VX5600 and LG VX8700. Both phones work in the 2007 Prius, but only the LG VX5600 works in the 2010. I am having trouble pairing the LG VX8700 phone with the 2010 Prius.

In the 2010 Prius, I choose Setup / Phone / Manage Phone / Add New and it showed

Please connect your phone
Device Name: SILVER PRIUS
Device Address: [14 hexadecimal characters]
Passcode: [4 digits]
Enter the passcode into your phone

On the VX8700 I clicked Menu / Settings and Tools / Bluetooth Menu / Add New Device. I saw the instruction to place my device into discoverable mode and clicked OK.
The screen said

SEARCHING (0 found)
​

and stayed that way for about a half hour.

I powered off the phone and powered it on again, then restarted everything. This time its screen said "SEARCHING (1 found)" and displayed one device as "Unknown Name" instead of "SILVER PRIUS."
I inspected its properties and its Device Address matched my silver Prius, so I entered my four-digit passcode and clicked "Pair" and waited... and waited... It never did connect.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

It may be possible that the Bluetooth 'discoverable mode' is timing out before you complete the pairing.

 

I doubt that. I've tried it in both orders (Prius first or phone first), after getting both prepared first, so I start one within a second or two of the other.

 

I only recently acquired my Prius. The dealer paired my mobile for me and said that that he had transferred my contacts. When I got hom, it didn't work, so I tried again myself.
I went through that same steps as you (and my dealer), and although it seemed to pair nothing actually happened, until I noticed a symbol on the drag down menu bar at the top of the screen (Samsung Ace). When I dragged down the menu, I was able to acknowledge a pending request, and all my contacts invisibly transferred. The phone works perfectly.

The only reason I relate this is because there may be some hidden or semi obscured request that you have to acknowledge.

On the Lexus CT200 forum (which has very similar electronics), someone discovered that the disappearing contacts with an IPhone can be replicated. If the IPhone is not on when the car is started the contacts (and the speed dials) disappear every time and need to be reloaded. My Lexus dealer said that he called the head Lexus Bluetooth guy and was told they were aware that it was a glitch in the software and that Toyota and Apple were working on a software solution. Perhaps some of these reported "compatability" problem can be attributed to a similar problem. Try complaining to your dealer, they are supposed to send it up the line and maybe it is a simple fix.

Good luck, it is infuriating to me when I lose my contacts and particularly my speed dials, which have to be loaded manually.
