Where to mount your GPS in 2011 Prius?

I got this one for my Garmin.

I have mine mounted on small side window btw front pillar and driver's door. Kinda pain to get it there, but it is the best place as it is right there and it does not obscure oncoming traffic.

 

The power cord is easily run under the dash. Somewhere there is a thread about this that gives instructions on how to do it. You dont have to remove the dash, just the air vent and the cover under the vent.

I plan to put a power supply under the dash but havent yet. My power cord is still routed to the power supply under the console.

 

I mounted mine right behind the steering wheel. This eliminates the hassle of trying to find a place on the windows/windshield and also trying to make it stick to the "non-stick" dash that we have in the cars. I've tried almost everywhere and found this to be the best solution. You can always stare ahead and just peek down at the GPS. The cord is hidden behind the steering wheel and then it comes out where it could be plugged into the DC socket in the storage "tray" below the console.

The steering wheel doesn't affect the display much and when turning you shouldn't be looking at the GPS anyway, so no worries there.

GPS: TomTom XXL 550 (5" display with Homer Simpson).

UPDATE: Forgot to mention that I've never ran into issues of theft because most people believe it's just part of the car rather than an attached device.

 

I'm curious also. I have the TomTom XXL540 and would be interested in mounting mine like that. Currently I'm using an aftermarket windshield suction cup, but it's still pretty far away.

 

Quite easy actually. Since the TomTom mounts are "flat", I just sandwiched the mount between the steering wheel and dash. Just lower the steering wheel a little bit, place the GPS mount in and raise the steering wheel back up.

Using heavy-duty double sided sticky tape instead of the one supplied with the TomTom dash mount circular piece also helps a little bit to keep it in place once on the steering wheel is pushed up.

 

I have my scanguage over the steering wheel where you have the Tom Tom. I recommend the 3M Dual lock reclosable plastic velcro. The same stuff that comes with the highway toll pass device. You get the plastic velcro from radio shack. It also comes in black color as well as clear. The good part of that is if you need to remove it to another car no problem and you can position it perfectly.

The ProClip looks good but it's too expensive for me. You will need two parts to mount the device: car mount and device mount. The car mount is $30, and the device mount is around $35. The total cost of $65 is just too much. But still thank you for providing the option!

 

I like that location, think I'll use it next month when we take a trip. I'll be using my HTC for navigation so I have a mount that works on the small front port window, but I have the round sticky disc that came with my TomTom so I'll put it between the wheel and the dash and use that location. Will post a pic when I get it mounted.

I have the "garmin friction mount". I like it because you can put it all away quickly in the glove compartment without leaving any suction marks or anything.

Do a google search to buy it.

This was the second mount I bought. I had a vent mount that had a ball on it and I took the ball and base off and screwed them to the Proclip mount. So I only had to buy the car mount. I didnt buy a device mount.

I too did not want to spend the money for the device mount so I just used what I had. It is way too expensive, but it put my GPS exactly where I want it.

 

The local police told me that GPS units are the number one cause of car burglaries ( broken windows). Keep your gps out of sight when you park, especially at night.

 

I am always shocked when people do not understand that. Having a big suction cup mark on your windshield has the same effect.

 

I am shocked that they are worth stealing.

 

And this is why I like using the beanbag mount, out of site, out of mind.

 

There isn't a day that goes by that there's at least one mention of someone getting their car broken into for a GPS unit, in the police blotter section of the local newspaper.

 

Another reason that I like the in dash nav units. They look great, have a bigger screen & thieves like the portable units since they are easy to sell & fit any car. I also like the garage at night.
