How does beeping work in the v for Reverse Camera? Is it only heard on the inside? Has the tone changed from previous models?

Only on the inside. You could disable the gen 2 prius beeps yourself, but only the dealer can disable the beeping on the gen 3s. I just got a 2012 V, and I haven't figured out how to disable, so I'll be driving by the dealership this week to get it turned off. So annoying.

According to the owner's manual, there is a customization option to set it to beep once and only once when you set it in reverse. No clue how to do it though...

    It's a dealer-only customization.

I test drove a v today and heard the beeps first-hand. They're annoying after a short time. Having the dealer reset the beep count to just one will the first thing that I do when I take delivery.

If it's anything like the standard 3rd-Gen Prius, those with a ScanGauge II or similar ODB-II type tool can disable the beep themselves, though most dealers should be willing as part of the sale. Just know to ask for it ahead of time.

Is it such a dangerous operation that only Service people can turn off the beeps?

I stopped by the dealer today and asked... they said that they'd have to charge a minimum 1 hour labor to make the change. However, the head customer service manager gave me his card and indicated we could probably have it done during my first scheduled maintenance "since we'll have it on the lift anyway", so that's the way I'm going to go.

If you can't find the trick here on PC then most likely it doesn't exist...

own a 2012 V, tried the trick that works on the first and second generation prius to kill the beeps, did not work. took it to the dealer and they had to connect it into their computers to program it for just one quick beep.

i'm told the reason they have the beep is that enough people confuse the shift + forward (which puts the car in reverse) as directing the car to go forward, and when it goes backwards, they really stomp on it...yikes.

so we pay the price. i say let evolution take its natural course...

I'm not sure if that really makes sense, at least here in America where the majority of cars are not manual shifters. Plus, it's mainly European manual shifters that have you shift the stick left and forward to go into reverse... most others are right and back.

I think the real reason for the bleeping beeps is because for a typical automatic transmission car, you can easily glance down at the shifter to see if you're in reverse or not. Since the Prius' shifter is that tiny joystick, you can't tell with a glance if you're in reverse. The little square that highlights the 'R' on the instrument cluster isn't very obvious either. At least, that's been my experience in the 3 weeks we've owned our Prius v!

That being said though, it is annoying, but since my wife and I are getting more used to it and now realizing the engineers at Toyota weren't trolls and actually had a good reason for adding this "feature", I'm not as hell bent on getting it changed.

Royal Palm Toyota changed my reverse beeping to a single beep at my second service at my request, no charge.

    Ya gotta ask.

Good to know you can debeep it! One beep will sound amazing after my first servicing (that sounds dirty).

Typically if a car company does something it is because:

    1) it sells more cars

    2) it's required by some government agency

    3) it's cheaper to produce

    4) it makes engineering sense

    5) the lawyers told them to

    (the order is arbitrary)

So, when considering this engineering change, it seems to me the most likely answer is: the lawyers said they should.
