I agree, it wasn't much better than big brand American beer, but it was better. Not up to normal German standards though.

Back in the late 80's I got stationed at a remote posting near Steenwijk, Netherlands. When the US Army defines something as "remote" you can count on it being way out there. My vehicle had not arrived yet so I was pretty limited in my choices of places to eat. While I loved the Dutch food, I was really missing a familiar American menu. On a Saturday one of the soldiers loaned me his bicycle and told me, "Sir, if you follow this road for 25 clicks you will find a McDonalds."

It took me a while to pedal that far but the country is flat and the ride was smooth. There in front of me was that glorious set of golden arches right in downtown Zwolle. That was when I realized, I had no Dutch Guilders and I didn't speak a lick of Dutch. This was going to be a problem.

Wasn't a problem for them! In a couple minutes I had two Big Macs, lots of fries and Heineken. I don't think any meal at a fast food restaurant holds a higher place in my memory.

I rode back to Steenwijk feeling full and well, a bit buzzed. The Dutch idea of Heineken makes that stuff we have in a bottle very weak.

That's what you get for drinking beer at a McD's in a country famous for beer. :D

It's like eating at a Taco Bell in Mexico.

I thought that was their phone company.

I did stop at a KFC in Chihuahua on a several week driving trip in the 1970s. It was the only good chicken I've ever had in a KFC. They must not have been using factory grown chickens there.

Nope. That's Telmex. It used to be run by the government, but Carlos Salinas, former President, sold it for a bargain basement price to his crony, a businessman whose name is Carlos Slim. (No kidding!) Altogether, Salinas is rumored to have stolen fifteen billion dollars from his country on his way out of office. That's not counting the money from his active collusion with and tolerance of and profit from the illegal drug trade.

They probably put chile in it. They even put chile on watermelon.

The notable difference was the chicken. The chicken tasted like chicken that had been raised outdoors and had some exercise. Much better than factory chicken.

If they did it wasn't enough that a person used to Mexican food and and had just spent 3 weeks in Mexico would notice.

It's a fascinating read for all. Highly recommend.

Pollard is a gifted author, but he colors outside the lines a little bit in the fields of science and economics.
Of course, there's a lot of low hanging fruit in the food biz here in the US, but his slash and burn style kinda made me want to run to the nearest Longhorn's and get a 16-ounce rib eye, medium rare. :)

Still...most of the US is over fed, and we're not the most active nation on the planet, so there is a lot that can be learned from his work, if you don't take it too seriously. ;)

I've had a beer with my quarter pounder in Mickey-D's, and with my chicken in KFC.
In the US, I generally eschew the fast food joints, and in fact I usually only eat out once or twice a month. One of the benefits of living in the country is that I can (and do) usually get food and meat that is locally produced.
My last Mc-anything was probably more than a month ago, and we had a different President the last time I had a McRib...(I think it was Bubba!)
The nearest Whole Foods is almost 100 miles away, and the last time I was in one (in Louisville) I was shocked at how expensive it is to eat like a liberal...

Hurry!! McRib ends on Nov 14th The McRib makes a McComeback If you can't find any McRibs, this site will help you McRib Locator. Did you know McDs came up with McRibs because they sold out of McNuggets? AM/PM also has knock off McRibs but not as tasty as the real thing.

If I go to McDonald's to get a Southwest salad with grilled chicken—the only thing I purchase from that establishment—the pre-recorded message at the drive through asks, "Would you like to get a large McRib meal today?"

Kind of makes me laugh, a little.

Think the McRib season coincides with the 'possum season?

Hurry the McRib ends today. I'm gonna buy McRibs for lunch and dinner and 2 more for breakfast for tomorrow morning. I figure it's gonna be another year before the McRib returns so I have a year to get this poison out of my system.
