Hi folks, Anyone knows what brand is the navigation system that is installed in the Prius 3 2011? Is it Pioneer? Billy
To the best of my knowledge the unit is specific to Toyota and has no connection with any after market head unit manufacturer, like Pioneer, Kenwood etc. In all probability is it made to a Toyota specification by one of their electronic system suppliers, maybe Matsushita or Fujitsu.
It's likely made by either Fujitsu Ten or Denso or one contracting the other. See FAQ - Navigation - Denso Europe, http://priuschat.com/forums/gen-iii...-2010-navigation-10-1-gen-6-update-dvd-2.html and http://www.fujitsu-ten.com/business/comfortable/product/, for example. The MFD from the 2nd gens said Fujitsu Ten on the back (http://www.techno-fandom.org/~hobbit/cars/mfd/). The nav UI between the 2nd gen and 2010-2011 Priuses. It's also very similar to other Toyotas and Lexuses from around that era. Fujitsu Ten has been a (but probably not the sole) supplier of stereos to Toyota for a long time. Denso is a major supplier to Toyota. edit: I stumbled across this video , featuring Denso and the Camry's nav system.
Denso is a Toyota Group company. [ame=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Denso]Denso - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]
FWIW, Electronics Supplier Denso Looks to Enter Hybrid and EV Battery Market says "Toyota currently holds a 23% stake in supplier Denso". FT.com / Companies / Automobiles - Chinese car chief backs pay demands also confirms the 23% stake. edit: http://www.globaldenso.com/en/investors/stock/index.html has more info on the stakeholders and http://www.globaldenso.com/en/investors/faq/index.html says
I found this while trying to figure out how Toyota, Denso, and JBL are connected. Tweddle Group Teams up with Market Leaders to Deliver Award Winning Toyota Entune I guess they all contribute technology. So I recon Denso makes the units then they brand them as JBL and install them in Toyotas?
FWIW, Denso also supplies nav systems to other automakers besides Toyota, such as GM. Search for Denso in http://www.chevrolet.com/assets/pdf/owners/manuals/2012/2k12volt_nav.pdf. Notice the UI is somewhat similar to that of Toyota's nav systems? Note that have a DEST button. Take a look at the conventions on pages 42-44 and the preferences on page 40.
The Toyota started to heavily cooperate with Harman/Kardon mfg. The new EU cars, like Yaris have the Touch(&Go) units (touch 6.5" screen, BT, iGo Lite ....) as a standard feature. I didn't find more details (OS version, how to root the unit) yet.
Good find! As mentioned in the above press release, JBL is one of the many Harman brands (Harman - AKG®).
For 2012, Denso makes the Premium HDD nav system and Harman makes the standard Display Audio w/nav system. JBL is part of the Harman group.
Re: Entune, due to another thread, I stumbled across this interesting info and links to press releases: Toyota Entune partners: Harman, QNX, Nuance, UIEvolution & INRIX Traffic (via phone).
On the note of Tweddle Group, I stumbled across this news today: Nuance is buying Tweddle Connect for in-car infotainment - Boston Business Journal http://www.nuance.com/company/news-room/press-releases/tweddleconnect.docx I've normally thought of Nuance as a voice recognition company.
