There is an abundance of information here! I am still learning, but here are a few that might help: 1. Increase tire pressure to 42/40 2. Pulse and Glide 3. "Warp Stealth" on high speed free way trips 4. Understand the phases of the hybrid engine process 5. Understand that MPG will vary based on your travel (shorter trips = less MPG), weather (cold vs. hot), and location. 6. Get a scangauge / ultra gauge, priidash, or torque app to have more information on how to improve your driving patterns. Ask and look around the forums and you can get a lot of tips here! [/QUOTE] No. You are not going to get 50 mpg on "short trips". If by "short trips" you mean 3 or 4 miles and then park it for a few hours.
One of the biggest advantages I have on our driving is that we commute to work each day on the same route. Over the last few months I have learned the route in economy terms. I know when to use the engine and when the electric motor to maximize the mileage. Obviously you need to use the provided monitoring system at the very least (its all I use) and have a keen eye ahead of you (as far as possible) to see what's coming up. There is no point accelerating towards a red light (or a light that will be red by the time you get there). Tricks like pulse and glide help most of the time - sometimes its better to let the slowing car recharge the battery for the traffic light ahead - that is route determined. Obviously pulling away from the lights should be done as gently as possible - acceleration costs and the harder it is the more it costs. When we first ran the route we got a moderate 44.4 mpg (US). Now - having made more of the car and learned the route for the hybrid approach, we get an astonishing (to me) 65.3 mpg average.
Don't drive with a Thule rack on your roof at all times. I get 46-48 mpg tops. Also, live in Florida.
