i say i also prefer a lower price option at the expense of NAV. having intimate knowledge of 3 different in car NAV systems and not really happy with any of them, it seems like the only true characteristic is accepting their various limitations.

put all three together and you have an acceptable solution so its built limitations or designed omissions that hamper the platform

now i use the car NAV but rely on google maps from my droid to get me somewhere

 

As long as you have ANY portable charge cable with a J1772 head, and it has a switching power supply, you can use that cable to charge the Prius. It doesn't have to be Toyota OEM.

 

Perhaps it will be the same info, just that there are two trip odometers so there would be two different sets of data to display?

Doug said to cut down the weight. Gas engine can be used because it is available unlike pure EVs. I think it makes sense because most of the time, it will be dead weight.

Preheating on the Leaf is available by electric heat and is most effective when plugged in. and using line power.

would be nice to allow preheating if only when plugged in. would go along way towards extending the rEV range

I suspect the standard nav is a way of distributing the plug in price around. With nav packages costing $1000 to $2000, there is likely plenty of margin there to help pay for other stuff.

They dropped the heat pump due to weight. The PHV has an electric heater in addition to engine waste heat.

 

Speaking of weight, comparison specs chart posted by Evnow shows Chevy Volt is 616 lbs heavier than the PPI! Toyota did a great job to bring the weight to 3,165lbs vs. the Volt's 3,781 lbs.

I agree with most posters here that pre-heating is essential in cold climates.

When you leave in the morning, the first km's are usually in EV mode, switching to normal hybrid operation only when reaching the freeway (after 10 km in my case). Those first km's you *need* heat in winter, not just for comfort, but also for safety to de-ice your windshield. Now you are forced to use battery power for that, reducing the already short electric range even further.

A question on the battery. We all know batteries degrade over time, even if you pamper them. Li-ION perhaps even more than other chemistries. Is this degradation factored in in the Plug-in Prius, so the 15 mile electric range can be guaranteed throughout the life of the car? Or will you instead experience a slow decline in electric range as the car ages? I believe the Volt has such a 'spare' capacity if I'm not mistaken.

 

There shouldn't be any ice if you park overnight in a garage.

And for my drive, I'm just a few blocks from the highway. So, I'll be starting with the engine anyway. Then using EV for the city driving closer to work.

Back when I had lots of suburb driving before reaching the highway, I would have been in your situation. But that's only one direction. If you save the EV for the trip home, you can have your cake and eat it too.

I would agree. My commute is 1.3 miles each way, with no highway driving, and we can get a bit chilly in the AM. The morning pre-heat would have been a nice addition.

Question: When I say "a bit chilly" that I'm referring to California coastal chilly- so probably not near as cold as some. If it dips into the 40's am I still able to drive completely EV?
