Traction Battery Hot

    I left home and got 1/2 mile down the road when the ABS, VSC and the Dreaded Red Triangle came on. I've cleaned the battery cooling fan (Big Dogs) recently and the dealer changed the Inverter cooling pump a few weeks ago. It is working as I see fluid moving in the reservoir. When I power up the car, the Battery cooling fan comes on within 30 seconds high speed. I've never heard it run on high speed before. When I put my hand in front of the cooling outlet I feel hot air. The car has 182K miles on it. The charge screen shows the battery about 1/2 full. The starting battery is original but has never been a problem. What should I do?
    Can I drive the car to the dealer? It will cost a fortune to have it towed as we live in the country.
    If it is the traction battery, is it worth replacing in a car with this many miles? The car is in pretty good shape otherwise. It's been a great car and I'd hate to part with it.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    If you have verified that all engine compartment fluid levels are correct and the car does not exhibit driveability symptoms other than the warning lights listed in your OP, then you can try driving your car to the dealer. You should assume your braking system is impaired so drive cautiously and leave plenty of room to stop.

    Bring your cellphone with a fully-charged battery in case you need to call a tow truck.

    It is not clear that your traction battery is the issue, if you did not see a warning icon in the MFD. It could be that you have a problem with the skid control ECU or a brake sensor, since you only mentioned the ABS and VSC warning lights.

    If your traction battery is the issue, you may consider buying a battery from a salvage vehicle, this may cost you $600 or so. However you would then have to find a shop willing to install it. Good luck.

    Yes! If all you need is a traction battery buy any 2004-2009 battery from a recycler. (don't buy a new battery from the dealer) If you get a used battery with 60-80k miles it should cost under $600 and be good for another 100k miles. Installation should cost around $200 if you can find an independent mechanic near you to do it....and if you were able to remove the battery cooling fan yourself you may even have enough skill to swap the battery pack yourself...it's not all that hard to do once all the trim etc is removed.

    The outlet near the backseat should suck in air, you shouldn't be able to feel hot air. Like the previous poster said, maybe when you put back the fan after cleaning it, it was not connected the right way.

    Correct, the backseat passenger side vent is an INLET, the outlet is on the inner RR fender down near the 12V battery.

    Yes, 3Prong can do Toyota traction battery swaps, although I myself spend most of my time these days in Boulder Colorado at our sister company, Boulder Hybrid Conversions.

    Hoping to be in the Bay Area week of Green Drive Expo. Not sure if we'll have a booth or not.

    If you live in the boonies, a AAA PLUS membership is well worth having. Free 100 mile tow any time a car you are in breaks down....membership is for the person, not a specific vehicle so if you are riding in your friends 74 Gremlin you can have it towed too.

    Thanks to all who replied. An update. I took the car around our loop about 2 miles. I really couldn't tell there was a problem other than the fan running full speed. When I got to the main road the car accelerated to 55mph effortlessly and climbed back up the hill with no problem. I have the VSC, brake and check engine lights on. I was wrong in my earlier post. I do not have the hybrid battery light on. The energy moniter shows 1 bar now and it is not going up even though it indicates it is trying to charge. The fan is running the right direction. There is an independant shop in Sacramento that works on the Prius. I plan to take the car there. The good folks on Prius chat were far more successful at diagnosing my cooling pump problem than the dealership. I am not impressed with their Prius knowledge.

    At the risk of belaboring a point: if the cooling fan is running in the correct direction the grille in the backseat will be vigorously sucking air in from the passenger compartment. If you feel air blowing out through the backseat grille then the fan is running the wrong way, in which case it is sucking in hot external air to blow over the traction battery and associated electronics. If hot air is just sort of gently wafting out of the backseat grille but you hear the fan running, then something is blocking its flow.

    I towed the Prius to the shop last week. I have not been happy with the dealer and, since I am way out of warrantee, I went to an independent shop that specializes in Hybrids. As I suspected, they found the traction battery bad. They quoted $1700 for a used one and $300 to install it. I probably could have found a cheaper one, but I am busy so I went with their solution. The car has not had anything except routine maintence since the 100k mile mark so it needed some TLC. They did the leaking engine water pump, plugs, serpentine belt, air filter, cabin air filter, brake flush clean and adjust, fuel injection/throttle plate. The price out the door with tax was $3100. Ouch! But the car was paid off a while ago and has not cost us anything but tires, oil and filters. If that $3100 gets us another 100K miles it was worth it. Time will tell.

    So the traction battery got replaced, the car got a good service but the original 12v battery is still in place...

    Hi All,
    Let me clairfy. The cooling outlet where the hot air was coming from is down by the 12v battery near the spare tire. The inlet, above the wheel well was drawing air. The 12v battery has never been a problem and passed the battery test with flying colors. It is on the short list to be replaced. I hate to throw away a perfectly good battery. By the time I took the car to the shop, the traction battery showed one bar and would not charge. And with the car idling, the fan would kick on within 30 seconds.
    I plan to make a filter for the inlet very soon.

    you should probably clean the fan.. maybe your battery is failing.. but if you clean the fan it will have an easier time cooling. mine was pretty clogged... about 50% and to me that's non functioning as a fan.
