2 weeks into my new Prius! over 1,000 miles as the family was visiting and I drove them all around. Now it's time to clean out the mess the 7 and 9 year olds made in the back of the car.

What have you found the best way to clean the seats, rugs and dash are?

Do I need to scotchguard the cloth seats?

Has anyone used a specific shampoo for the rugs? Or simply vacuum?

And what about the dash? Lots of scuffs already showing up - no idea why. Is there anything that protects the dash at all?

And washing the car? How long before I can/ should wax it?

Thanks for any advice on keeping her clean!

With the interior, I usually just use a vacuum and a damp cloth with warm water to wipe the interior down. I may use antiseptic from time to time (esp. if passengers sneeze or cough all the time!).

For the outside, I use a garden variety car wash soap. I've tried two different brands and I couldn't tell the difference. The Turtle one may have been a tad shinier after the wash but I wax my own car so that's a moot point for me.

Claybar - I've tried both Mother's and Meguire's. Same thing to me. It depends whether you want the liquid wax that Mother's includes or not.

Wax - Mother's paste wax. Seems better than the liquid version. Also, it's the "pure" carnuba wax, not the cleaner wax. Cleaner wax has polish in it.

You can wax it at any time. I usually do it after 6 months (I tend to pick up cars in the Fall lol).

Thanks- I never even heard of claybar. I'll look into this now as well! My plan is to keep this car in better shape than any car I've had before!

Note that a claybar will strip the car of wax so you will have to wax the car after you claybar. A claybar will remove fine contaminants embedded in the paint that regular washing won't remove

I second the idea of using the claybar then waxing or polishing.

P urchase a bottle of Zep carpet and upholstery cleaner from Home Depot. It works extremely well for cleaning the interior and quick cleanup after the kids spill something.

There is a product called 303 Aerospace Protectant that work well on the dash and other plastic parts. I use it on the outside plastic as well for UV protection. Better that ArmorAll and it doesn't make things slippery. I get it at Ace Hardware but other places have it as well.

Related- I need to ad a phone mount and found one that sticks to the dash. Is that a bad idea? I'm guessing I would eventually be able to take it off maybe with something like goo be gone? I'm a little worried about taping something down to the dash board- but not seeing any other way to mount a phone. The vent clip didn't fit on the vents.

Have you tried a window mount? The triangular windows are large enough for a suction cup.

Not allowed to mount on windows in Cali. I ended up with a stick on dash mount near that side drivers window. It's ok, not great. I also have an XM radio and nowhere to put that either. Toyota has left no room for add ons like a phone, gps or sat radio.

I thought the deal with window mounts in CA (I'm in the bay area) was it had to be within the first six inches of the lower corner.

Has anyone used a specific shampoo for the rugs? Use anything that will clean what your going after. The floor covering is made from plastic bottles and really does not have a nap or pile. Grease can be cleaned with Water and Dawn soap and mild brushing.
This flooring material is so tight that it is difficult to keep the floor mats in place. The drivers side has hooks... that works but the other foot wells ... that is the question/ :)

the dash marks are easly removed by using a damp turkish towel. The marks I had on my dash were from my knuckles when I was cleaning the inside of the windshield. I removed them with a damp hand towel. I wipe the dash once a week. Good luck

I only wish you could purchase just the driver's mat. Our's wore right through at around 5000 km. Plus, it would be nice if the Toyota mat had rubber/vinyl insert at the driver's heel.

Do you guys recommend using armour all protection on the dash? Or just wiping it down with a dam cloth?

My pref is damp cloth, don't like that greasy kid stuff. D.O. for tires: I think ArmorAll turns them brown over time.

Like Mendel I only use a damp cloth for interior plastics. I do use tire gel on the tires. My brand new Michelin tires are already starting to brown and I have not applied any tire shine yet.

Really?? That was quick. We've had the AS mats on our 2005 and they're still new. (granted, the 2005 ones were heavier... and probably thicker than the new ones. The weight difference is noticeable).

Really? I thought it was just the windshield! Oops! I mounted my GPS on the driver's side window of the rental car when I was there haha.

If you really want to go nuts with the paint, use Zaino products. Claybar first, lay on a few coats of wax, and it'll look amazing. There's also a spray used with a non-woven towel to wipe off dust between washes, and their car soap is good too.

I'd be very surprised if you'd be tagged for a suction cup mount on the window in CA. Perhaps if you're pulled over for speeding the officer would add that to the ticket, but otherwise I'd throw caution to the wind, push the envelope, and really live dangerously.

A friend of mine got pulled over in his Prius for having his GPS on a suction cup on the window. I once got pulled over for "eating in the car" I kid you not. Pulled out of the Del Taco- and they immediately pulled me over. I hadn't even put the change away -let alone unwrapped anything. LA cops!

I agree about the floor mats- they are CRAP! I'm planning to buy better ones.
