Posting a photo of aftermath of rear-end collision.
Had stopped for a cop with his lights and siren and full size paint co. van didn't stop. Cop estimated collision at 40 or 45mph.
Inertia reels worked perfectly, only left rear passenger door did not open, and car was able to be driven onto shoulder under power.
Did not see any apparent leakage from drive battery.

I hope they ticketed the idiot who hit you! 90% of the accidents I see during my commute are rear-ended because of inattentive drivers and tailgaters! There is a simple cure, slow down and pay attention! Seems impossible for some though... Hope everyone is okay...

It looks like the car did a great job protecting you. And no, that won't buff out.

That sucks. Hope something good comes out of it. I wonder if the battery can be salvaged?

No citations will be issued unless there's injuries.

Wow, looks like you got hit by a train! Hope your fine. At least the rear end crumpled to absorb the impact.

I wasn't insinuating it was in anyway his fault, hope it wasn't taken that way. I just know most of the accidents I see day-to-day during my Atlanta commute are accident where some inattentive driver was either tailgating or not paying attention and rear-ends the car in front of them. What's really alarming is the number of poor folks hit at stop lights when they are sitting still and the idiot behind them fails to stop! Those people need to be ticketed and their licenses revoked if it happens multiple times because they are a menace!

    Thanks for all the comments.
This was a rental car used while on disaster relief ops for Red Cross in NC aftermath of hurricane Irene.
I've got a 2006 at home w/106k and am on the list to order a plugin.
My passenger and I were both ok and were just a little freaked out from the experience.
My first thought was that this was a crash and it sounded just like the sound effects in the movies; bump, crunching metal and tinkling glass.

I was rear ended in my 2010 Prius just last month. I was stopping on the freeway for traffic and the guy hit me at 55 which sent me out of control into the cars stopped in front of me (I may have blacked out for a split second. Once I found the brake pedal again I got control and was able to pull off to the shoulder. The body was messed up but the cabin stayed in tact and I was safe, just a sore shoulder/neck.

I was really impressed with the way the Prius held its value. It was only five months, but I got nearly the entire purchase price from the ins. co. Enough to give me a decent downpayment on a 2011 after paying my loan.

i'm glad you say you're ok... i was in a low speed accident and i've been feeling stuff since... it didn't set in till a few months down the line.

there should always be a ticket issued in these cases IMO...

    that's pretty totaled.

i assume your HV battery disconnected... i would also assume it's crushed.. spare plus jack, etc.. and your huge crushed in back... they probably embedded themselves into the battery casing. (total guess)

in a total, isn't it possible to keep the car and the money? (i've always been unclear on the rules of that) the entire front end of your car is still worth a fair amount of cash...

In NJ if the police won't issue a ticket one can go to the Township Clerk & file charges.

When the insurance company pays for the car I doubt they will give it away. I suppose the (now) previous owner can buy it from them.

It's hard to believe that no ticket was issued. When you hit someone from behind, it's pretty hard to make a case that you are in no way at fault. What happened to the "Assured Clear Distance" clause of the uniform motor vehicle code?

My accident was in North Carolina. The driver that hit me was issued a ticket and his license was revoked on the spot. I assume that means he already had several recent violations.

At that speed, you should at the least have a sore neck unless you happened to have your head all the way against the headrest.

In my experience, the cop just takes down statements from each driver, notes facts such as damage on either vehicle and assigns fault at a later date. A citation may come at a later date for the fellow who hit you.

If that were my car, I would want it to be a total loss and get a new car.
