89.8 MPG average (2.62 l/100 km) for 70 miles (113 km) in 2011 Camry Hybrid

    They only work at near 0mph, no?? They don't work while the vehicle is in motion > 8mph (compression braking notwithstanding)

    To be honest, I don't know. that is a good point.
    I would guess even if it is so, as time goes on, the function may be expanded.
    Although I gotta think that the impact on MPG is pretty minimal on a non-hybrid car. With the Hybrid even if the hill isn't quite steep enough to maintain your desired speed, the ICE can still be left off because I can get a little bit of a push from the electric motor. Where as in a non-hybrid, even if you just need a little power, you have to use the engine. So witht he hybrid the ICE can be left off much more often. But maybe combined with cylinder deactivation down the road...

    And that's the advantage of a full hybrid. However, even if half of the cars had start/stop technology. Can you imagine how much quieter traffic jams would be?

    The smart's S/S function works below 8km/h (5mph). I don't know if there's a standard or if each manufacturer has its own limit.

    start and stop systems work only if many variables are satisfied... for instance, cant have AC on.

    this is why they dont help in EPA numbers but help in Euro cycle thats very old school when it comes to calculating mpg.

    s/s on the prius actually does work with the A/C on, as the A/C doesn't need the ICE to work. At least one other manufacturer is also using and electric A/C with their S/S

    Sort of. The ICE will come on sooner and more often when you are running the AC. Sometimes it may not shut off at stop lights if your SOC is low from running the AC hard.

    correct, you have to have the juice in that battery -- of course. Whether that is regen juice or juice from the ICE. But that is different from what the previous post said in that the A/C had to be off for S/S to function.

    Gen 2 and Gen 3 only. In the Gen 1, the Prius will shut off the A/C when the engine turns off at a light unless MAX A/C is selected on the climate control dial (it had dials, not buttons), then the engine will continue to run to run the compressor to provide cold air.
