Grrr. I was finishing lunch with my sweet husband, when a man came into the restaurant and hollered, "Does someone in here have a red Prius in the parking lot?" Great. Turns out he had witnessed a young lady back into my car. He spoke to her, told her to wait for the owner of the car. After he came inside and found me, we went out, and she had left. Fortunately, this kind stranger had her license tag. The police have now talked to her and explained the error of her ways!

She put a good sized dent in my rear bumper, but fortunately missed the light and the hatch (by not very much). I'm not so mad as I am irritated because getting any car fixed is a time-consuming hassle. I haven't even needed the first tire rotation yet!

Gripe, gripe, gripe. I do love this car. I am getting great mileage, and I am learning to like myself as the driver of a red car. Maybe the young lady will go re-practice her parking skills after today's adventure.

While it totally sucks that it happened to you, I'm just glad to know there are people out here still who are willing to help when they see someone do something bad and try to get away with it.

Someone took what I believe was a shopping cart into my 2009 and left a pretty big dent and didn't bother to leave a note. Cost me my $250 deductible but without that it would have cost me close to $900.

    Some people...

Some lovely citizen slammed their giant SUV door into my new Prius in a parking lot. No note, of course. The two inch crease-type dent in the door looks like it would cost a lot of money to get fixed. (I had a local body shop give an estimate for a deep scratch in the front side bumper and they wanted almost $1000 to fix that right - $700 to touch it up). I am living with both of these. I can't see spending all that money when there are an infinite number of turkeys around who will likely chip, ding, dent or damage my car again.

What do you get for a hit and run in NC if you are a young lady (if that makes a difference)?

Depends on the cop and what she's willing to do if offered.

But really ... does it not seem like she should be charged given the account of the incident?

I'm not a lawyer, but she most likely was charged with leaving the scene of an accident and failure of some type to operate her car safely.

The OP might have to go to court on this one unless this girl fesses up and pleas guilty during her trial. Since nobody was injured and this took place in a parking lot, it'll most likely be a slap on the wrist as long as she hasn't been at fault for tons of other vehicle related accidents.

Subsection (c) refers to accidents involving damage to property but the details are more pertinent to reportable crashes.

If the damage wasn't sufficient to be reportable she doesn't have to stay, but must leave a note with her details. If reportable it should be reported and she should have remained. Either way the violation is a Class 1 Misdemeanour.

Well, it appears she had 48 hours to report it. And she would have right away except she didn't have a pen. (yeah right!)

Sounds like the damage is to the bumper cover? It -may- just pop back into shape if pressured from the inside. That means removing it. Maybe less than $1000. If that won't work it's new bumper cover time. Then paint. Add labour, and you're way over $1000.

Yup, Pearl has a few "modifications" from parking lot morons. I expect it. I see them driving all the time. I'm just happy they hit me when they were moving slowly and I was parked!

I do love the title of this thread. Nice touch.

Only excuse for not waiting or leaving details to have an injury treated but in that case you have to return to the scene when you can.

About $1100 for our recent rear bumper replacement (my wife's fault, my errors haven't needed a body shop repair).

David, thanks for the compliment on my title.

The officer put down $2000 damage as his estimate. The metal is folded in one place. It is definitely not a pop-it-out dent as is is larger than a basketball in diameter

I will post a pic in the next day or two.

Well, if it is the bumper cover it's plastic. There isn't much under it for several inches. So it may just be fix or replace that. If you're lucky. If she hit the body then it will be different, though metal is easier to fix rather than replace, but the cost would be similar. Labour is what will cost most. In comparison the bumper cover is cheap. It's painting it and installing it that is actually just as expensive or more expensive.

This still sounds like it's the bumper cover (but if it dented some metal, my info doesn't help much). I was paid $580 by the insurance company when a girl took out the corner of my bumper cover. I was told they would have to remove the bumper cover and send it someplace to repair and paint. I just kept the money. I'll finger paint the damaged area if I don't like the scratched look.

I was told that if they had to replace the bumper cover, it would be about $800.00, including painting.

I was also told that there is some miscellaneous stuff under the bumper cover which can get damaged, but will costs $20-$30 to replace. But if the damage gets down to the metal, all bets are off and the cost can get rather high.

There was also a YouTube video (I think) in which the guy popped out a dent in the bumper cover with a hair dryer.

Sorry to hear about the damage. In my case the girl tried to leave but the parking attendant stopped her.

While driving home from work in my Barcelona red I was hit by a huge tree branch during a freak storm. I got the car in Feb. $2,180 damage. I just hope they can match the paint.

I hope you're OK and sorry to hear about your Barcelona. I would be glad it didn't come through the windshield.I hope you find a great body shop with a good eye for paint.

Oh, and watch your insurance in a couple of months. My very excellent insurance company made a mistake once - they chalked me up for an at-fault accident for hail damage. When I discovered this, they quickly fixed it, but still....hail!!!

A smidgen on $1100 on my car. This is partly due to the little chip on the quarter panel. It's visible in the picture.

The dear is at the collision shop as I write. I secured a Prius rental - same year and package as my car, just with more miles on it, about 15,000. I am interested to see the differences in how they drive. For sure, I am unhappy with the tires on the rental - I think it's a balance issue. Will be watching the mpg as I do normal driving this week to see what I think of the break-in theories.

    Long, promised, here's the pic.

    Beat ya :(

Some idiot decided to go straight in a turn lane and took out our bumper and half of the rear quarter and scraped the crap out of the wheel too.

Christy had to duct tape the bumper on to get home.

I'm not a lawyer, but if this were me. After she's repaired I would see if you can take the lady to small claims court and have her pay you for repairs.......this is unless her (if she has any) insurance co is paying for the repairs.
Any logical judge should award you something.
