Just traded my 09 Civic EX for a 2011 Prius ii. I have a set of winter tires with only 3000 on them and would like to use them on the Prius. They are P205 / 55 R16. I don't think the steel rims will match the bolt pattern and would have to be replaced. Would there be any negative effects to this?
You should have wheels that match the tire diameter. R16 means you need 16" wheels. If you plan to put the R16 on 15" wheels, is that what you mean?, I would expect you'd have serious stability travel - I don't even think it is possible. I have my winter tires on a separate set of steel 16" wheels.
I am going to mount them on 16" steel rims if I can find a set. Town Fair Tire can't locate a set of new steel rims with the correct offset to clear the caliper. Maybe I should just try to sell them, they only have 3000 miles on them.
I'd just sell them and look for a set of oem wheels or use your oem wheels for winter and buy yourself nicer wheels for summer.
FYI, Corolla steel rims will work with snows, in the stock 195/65R15 size. They also fit on our Touring Model which comes with the optional 17" wheels.
Thanks for that info. There are no clearance issues with the brake calipers? (I was told that by Town Fair Tire)
No. The dealership I dealt with said they would need to verify fit, guess it was first time for them, or very infrequent. At any rate, drove in with 17" OEM alloys with 205/45R17's, drove out with 15" corrola rims (with Michelin X-Ice 195/65R15). I'll dig up the Corolla part no and post tonight. I think they were $70 each. They also sold me plain, open ended nuts more suited for the steel rims, for around $32. I believe the alloy rim nuts would actually work, but they look kind of funny. Also, this keeps them newer looking, sub'ing cheap nuts for salty winter conditions. I was toying with the idea of just buying rims from them and going to Costco for the tires, but with the uncertainty of fit, went with the dealership: one stop shopping, and price not that much more.
From my notes: installed Michelin X-ice 195/65R15 on Corolla Steel rims p/n: 42611-02471-sw (snows) Not sure if -sw is actually part of the number, I've seen it with/without. Believe it stands for Steel Wheel. If you have no fitment issues, Costco is cheaper route though. And if there's a manufacturer's discount going (say $70 off on a set of 4), Costco will take it off at the till, whereas most others just give you a mail in coupon. So you get your discount right away, and you pay sales tax on the net amount, reduced by that $70.
