I'm thinking of putting the OEM 17" wheels on my Prius III and i hear a lot of talk about the TPMS. If i were to make this change do I need to do anything to the TPMS? If the set i buy doesn't have the TPMS can i take it out of my 15" set and put it on the 17's?

Yes, the TPMS can be transferred. Will it require a kit? I don't know. When I went from my OEM 15" to TC's 17", TPMS kit had to be used in order to install them.

It's a good upgrade. Good luck in your search!

Yes, you could use the TPMS from the 15s. No kit required. You could also go without the TPMS, but the low tire pressure light will always be on in your dash.

I opted to not use TPM for our snow tires on separate rims: a very easy decision: they are very pricey. For me anyway, it was a non-issue: a little warning light shows on the dash, even less obnoxious than light saying if the passenger air bag is off/on. After a bit you don't even notice it.

Funny: everytime we roll back into the garage the car "finds" the TPM's of the summer tires. They're sitting in a stack, adjacent to the car.

How do you like the ride and handling? What air pressure are you running?

I feel the ride to be a little rougher but it's my wife's daily commuter and she hasn't noticed much of a change. I haven't checked the tire pressure. What would you suggest i run it at?

    Wow! Looks great. :)

I 'm not going to suggest a specific setting then have your wife angry with me. I will say that with my Michelin Primacy MXM4 tires I have them at 46/44. I tried them at the max psi of 51 but with the lowering springs it was a bit harsh. Maybe try a higher psi then back it down if the wife doesn't like it. As long as you are at or above the OEM setting you are safe. :)

The wheels do look nice! Just out of curiosity, how much did it cost you? I'm thinking about doing this myself sometime.

    Looking good!

I have a Prius V and I really like the looks of the 17" wheels--they were definitely a factor in getting the V.

Regarding tire pressure--when I first got my Prius, I initially ran the pressures recommended on the B pillar sticker (33F/32R from memory). After reading that many people on this forum increase the pressure for improved MPG, I tried adding 5 PSI, but the decrease in ride comfort wasn't worth it. The 17" tires seem pretty sensitive to PSI changes.

I just took those insipid wheel covers off my OEM 15" and ordered some centre caps from Parts.com and they look GREAT! I like the look of the OEM 17" but that was an expense that I couldn't justify right now. Maybe sometime in the future when I need new tyres, I will invest in the OEM 17" rims. :D

ASAP after purchase, I raised our 218/45R17 OEM's to 42 front, 40 rear, but found the ride pretty harsh. Going over speedbumps at anything more than a dead crawl was too rough. On guidance of a thread here, I backed off to around 38 front, 36 rear. Ride is noticeably more compliant, cornering feels "planted", and AFAIK no change in mileage.

FWIW: I'm using Michelin X-ICE in winter, in 195/65R15 size. Those I set around 42/40 f/r. Basically: the deeper the tire the better it seems to handle higher pressure, as far as ride quality.

Yup! Tires had about 5000 miles on them. I saw the posting and called/picked up the wheels immediately. These rims are hard to come by esp at that price. Got them installed on the same day. This was only 1 week into having the car. I couldn't stand the 15' look, they are hideous.

The 17s look a lot better. I have a question. When you go from 15 inch rims to 17 inch rims is there anything on the car you have to adjust to keep the speedometer accurate and the distances recorded on the odometer and the other distance info such as "Trip A", "Trip B"? I have had my first Prius (2011 Prius III) for one month tomorrow. I like the larger rims/tires.
    Thx.

If you stick with the stock sizes, the 15 and 17 are essentially the same diameter (the 17 is a hair smaller but not enough to require speedometer correction) because the tire on the 17 is lower profile.

In theory this works but in application things tend to turn out differently.

For example, I was using the Yokohama dB Super E-Spec 185/65/15 tires with a diameter of 24.5" and revs per mile of 848.

I replaced them with Michelin Primacy MXM4 215/45/17 with a diameter of 24.7" and revs per mile of 844.

Look at the actual difference in size. Sometimes you have to check the specs of the tire you are interested in as they can vary a bit. How much of a difference does this make in real mpg terms? Probably not much but in my case the 17s are larger and will drop my measured mpg a bit. :)

What's a reasonable price for four 17" Prius V wheels? I found a set from Craigslist for $600 but I'd have to drive to socal!
