For people who maintain their own oil (changes, top off etc), do you keep track of your approximate consumption rate?

I know mine is "not much", but this oil change interval I've been tracking it more closely. So far it looks like about 1/8" (just under) on the dipstick per 3000 miles (3mm per 5000 km). This is with 5w30 synthetic oil on an engine with about 125000 km (80000 miles) on it.

I'd be interested if others wanted to post their info here. Summarize it something like :

    Miles on Engine : 80,000
    Oil Grade/Type : 5w30 synthetic.
Approx Consumption rate : < 1/8" on dipstick per 3000 miles.

BTW. Two things I was wondering (forgot to measure). So if anyone knows this data please post it.

    1. How far apart (in mm or inches) are the two dimples on the dip stick.
    2. Approx what capacity (quarts or pints or liters) does it take to fill from the lower to the upper dimple.

    Thanks. :)

i track my daughters 04 w/ 85,000 miles and my 08 with 25,000 and cannot visually see a change in level on the dipstick of either from just after change to just before. she does hers every 5000 and i do mine once a year 7-8000. we both have it changed at the local mechanic/ gas station. assume he uses recommended oil.

Zip. I change oil (Mobil 1, 0/20W) every 5k miles and never see any oil consumption. I am careful to not overfill with oil (unlike the Toyota dealer) and use an extra capacity Mobile 1 oil filter.

Oil Grade/Type : 5w30 usually non synthetic ( I bought cases years ago when on sale) I will go to synthetic when my stock is used up.
Approx Consumption rate : ~1 inch on dipstick per 6000 miles.

I change oil/filter roughly at 7,500 miles, every 7 -8 weeks. Used as mail route vehicle. I bought the car at 110k , the prior owner probably maintained the oil at the regular schedule, the car was in very good condition.

When the dealer was doing my oil I didn't notice any consumption, though I think that was just because I didn't look as closely. I think dealer used to overfill by about 1/8" and then after 10000km it was probably about 1/8" under, but 1/8" was small enough for me to still read it as "full" and estimate the consumption at zero.

You've got to be pretty careful to measure it to something as small as 1/8". Small changes in the level (inclination) as well as temperature and amount of drain back (after shutting off the engine) can mask that sort of measurement. This oil change I was very careful to measure this and was able to detect the small oil consumption. I'll monitor it over the next 3000 miles (second half of the oil change interval) and see if it is consistent.

Not bad for an engine that's done so many miles northwichita. Can you tell me, does one inch correspond to about the distance between the dimples (Low Full) on the stick? I keep meaning to measure this next time I pull the stick but somehow always forget to. :p

I'm also impressed by how clean the outside of the engine is in general, I never have washed it. The inch is a guess, the measure between the dimples on the oil stick.

uart, yours is a pretty close match to mine. I just did 10,000 miles on Mobil 1 0W-20 and found less than 1/2" change on the dipstick from start to finish. Car has 83,000 miles now, 2005.

    Hi All,

    Mine's a 2005 (Gen 2 as you know).

My owner's manual says it's 1.5 quarts (US) between the full and low marks.

My calipers say it's 1.7 inches or about 44 millimeters between the full and low marks.

Mine uses about one half quart every 5 k miles. It currently has 89 K miles. The last two oil changes have been a partial synthetic (Carquest, thought it was full synthetic, it's not, but it meats the legal definition of full synthetic in the US) and a full synthetic (Penzoil). Always 5-30 viscosity. I have the Mobil 1 5-30 for the next change.

I bought mine at 63 K miles. It had been a corporate lease car and had one prior private owner. I assume good oil changes prior to my ownership because the engine appears clean inside the oil filler cap and it runs wonderfully. I do suspect the previous owners ran it fast (Arizona corporation and an Oregon commuter on I-5).

When I change the oil, I put in 3.5 quarts (as recommended by several PriusChatters) with a new Toyota filter. This does not bring it up to the full mark. It's less then one quarter of the distance between the marks below the full mark. When the oil level reads below the half way point between the marks, I add the last one half quart and it comes back up to the level it was at with a fresh change and refill of 3.5 quarts.

My car sees a lot of short trips, which can increase oil consumption. I'm not at all worried about this level of oil consumption. I've never owned a new car and I've never had a car that used so little oil.

Since my car sees so many short trips, which is a more severe use, I change the full synthetic every 6 to 7 K.

    Fun thread. Thanks, Dan

Thanks for measuring the dipstick 2maples49. It's interesting that you, myself and Seilerts all have 2005 models with around 80,000 miles.

Given that the distance between the dimples is 1.7 inches and I was estimating it as only one inch then I'd say my other estimate was out too. That 1/8" probably should be more like 1/8 of 1.7 inches. So it's probably more like 0.2" or 5mm (per 3000 miles), and if the dipstick is volume_linear then that would correspond to about 180 to 200 ml (about 3 ounce) per 3000 miles.

I plan to do about 8000 to 9000 miles on this oil change so I think I'll top-off at around 5000 and try to measure exactly what it takes to bring back to just under the top dimple where it started. I'll post the updated info here of course. :)

Approx Consumption rate : Negligible consumption over my 10,000 mile oil changes. I always fill with 3.5 quarts and when it's time to be changed, it's in the same spot. The oil always comes out looking cleaner than that from my wife's Civic hybrid, even with more miles on it.

My 2005 Prius has almost 153K miles. Last oil change, approximately 0.7 qts after 4400 miles after filling initially with 3.75 qts with new filter. I do the oil changes myself. I don't trust quick lube places or stealerships.

All internal combustion engines are supposed to consume some oil. I drive at 70 mph - 55 miles per day. Running at engine at higher rpm like I do does result in greater oil consumption. It's normal. I don't worry about it one bit.

It's probably reasonable for an engine in tiptop shape to consume 1/2 qt every 5000 miles.

For those who claim that their Prii don't consume any oil - start getting worried. That means your oil may have moisture in it that isn't being removed because you don't drive far enough or fast enough to heat the engine oil adequately. People with really short commutes would have this issue.

Yes I agree with this. I wasn't posting this thread because I was concerned about my small oil consumption, just out of interest in what others are getting.

In theory every engine must burn some oil. I think the thing is that the measurement on the dipstick can be a little vague, especially if you're not right on a dimple. That along with the other factors that give variations that I mentioned before (like whether or not the car is dead level, the temperature and the amount of drainback and even the level of fuel and moisture dilution) means that for some people the answer is "approximately zero", even though there's some oil consumption.

Yeah 0.7 qts over an oil change is no problems at all for a car with 150 kmiles on it.

he may be right about the short commutes. two 7 mile trips a day for me and 2 4 mile trips a day for my daughter might be prolematic if we keep our cars for the long run. :(

Just an update on my oil consumptions monitoring.

Today I topped-off the oil after 6000km (midway point for my OCI). The oil was only down about 7 to 8 mm (about 3 tenths of an inch) on the stick and it took just under 300mL to top up to where it originally started.

Comparing this will the estimated amount based on 2Maples49 data above. Estimated is 0.3"/1.7" * 1.5 qts = 0.264 qts (about 250 mL), so very close to what I measured.

Today when I was checking my oil, one of the things I was testing was how long it takes the oil to warm up. I drove about 5 miles (mostly 40 - 45 MPH) and the oil on the dipstick was barely even warm to touch (like hardly much more than body temperature). The outside temperature was mild but not cold, about 18C (64F) and it really surprised me how cool the oil had remained.

So judging from this then I'd say that your two cars might very rarely get the oil warmed up. That would certainly mean less oil consumption and possibly some water and fuel build up in the oil.

I have read many use synthetic oil. I own a 2007 and have brought to dealer for changes. I am considering switching to synthetic. I thought I should add mobil 1 synthetic 5W - 30. What is Mobil 1 0/20W? Note: I live in very cold climate during winter and thinking of changing this winter.

My oil consumption is so close to zero that I can't even tell. Just changed the oil after about 7500 miles. I had filled it to halfway between the marks (3.5 quarts?), and that's where it was just before the change. 2006 with about 64,000 miles, Mobil 1 5W/30. The old oil looked newer than the new dino oil I just put in our 1987 BMW (it drinks/leaks a lot).

I haven't seen it mentioned here lately, but I've been using a larger than standard oil filter. It's a Purolator PL20195, and measures just under 5 inches tall. The standard one is about 3 inches tall, and a little smaller diameter.
