My husband owns his own courier service and drives over 260 miles in town a day. The prius has been the best investment we could have ever made. Other than, tires, oil changes and car washes we have not had any major problems. The dash did go out around 200,000 miles but he was able to still continue to work as usual. We figured at one point we would need to replace the combination meter. Well we are now at that point, we were wondering too if the combination meter could have anything to do with the air conditioner. The A/C works but at random intervals will stop blowing cold air and just blow hot. We didn't know if it was part of the combination meter or just the fact that we are in Nebraska with 100 degree weather and 80% humidity. It has been hot hot hot for the past week and this has just started to happen. The toyota service dept said it is fine and all we need is the combination meter. Thanks for any input, this forum has been a wealth of information for us.
Do you guys fall under the inverter coolant pump replacement warranty? If the inverter pump is going out your inverter could be getting hot and the car will shut off the AC to prevent the inverter from overheating. Very impressive mileage there.

We had the combination meter replaced at the Toyota Dealership which cost $750 and it fixed the problem. We are still going strong but today we are going to change the spark plugs for the first time. The check engine light is flashing and the engine is sputtering. So I am hoping that this is a quick and easy fix to our problem. Seeing we have so many miles on it and it has never been done, probably best to do it anyways!
I did check into that but unfortunately ours did not qualify for the recall that replaced the inverter pump. The combination meter did get the problem fixed but sure was hoping for something a little less expensive. That bill was $750.
How many miles now? 300K+ on the original plugs is impressive. Please post pictures of them! Still on the original transaxle fluid? If plugs don't fix your problem, try replacing the PCV valve and clean the throttle body and MAF sensor.
A wealth of information and help is available on this forum when repairs come up. You may wish to check here, perhaps start a thread, before settling for a dealership repair. E.g., within the last few weeks our resident high mileage courier guy '2 fas 4 u' (~ 435k miles!) repaired *his* combination meter for $137 total by sending it to PC member Peef. 1+++ Seilert's advice to clean the MAF and throttle body. Cost is about $3 and 15 minutes of your time.
The production change was in January 2007. All 04-06 and maybe half of 07s are covered. Even though there have been failures reported for late 07 and 08+, those are covered only by powertrain warranty. By the way, A/C that runs cold/hot/cold on the same trip is NOT due to IC pump failure. It is due to a problem in the A/C system.
Under CARB states, you get over 100,000 more warranty miles for synergy related failures, than you get for standard powertrain warranty items. Certainly the inverter pump would fall under that. Certainly Toyota hybrid owners shouldn't be required to wait until they fail. Or must they.
If you have a car that falls under the recall aka limited service campaign, there is no need to wait for failure. Toyota defines the IC pump as a powertrain warranty item, not a hybrid component, according to TSB. Not saying that it is right, or that someone in a CARB state could not challenge this interpretation, just saying that's what they have decided. I think it comes down to it not being a "major" (expensive) component.
