Model III with Solar roof. Have driven 28,000 miles since buying the car August 2009. 70-75% highway mileage at about 60 mph, remainder on stop and go city/county streets at 25-40 mph. Completely flat terrain in CA central valley. Hot summers (~100F) mild winters. I've filled 59 tanks of gas so far, 531 total gallons of gas. Have averaged 52.7 mpg (actual calculation) over those 28K miles. The car's estimate is 55.3 mpg, which is a good 5% overestimate. Not surprisingly cold weather (~40F, well that's cold for us) and wind decrease mileage during the winter months, with my lowest mileage for a tank of gas = 46.5mpg. Spring and fall weather yield the best mileage for me. I do not pay attention to the car's minute by minute estimates or the cars estimate for a particular trip. I do record the car's estimates at each tankfull but only for comparison to the real numbers. So far my best recorded mileage for a tank of gas was 58.3mpg over 450 miles. I drive slow, accelerate slow (when safe) and do not use hypermileage techniques such as pulse and glide. I just simply drive the speed limit on local roads and about 60 mph in the slow lane on highways, glide into stops when possible etc. My experience tells me it is not hard at all to get 50 mpg with this car under appropriate conditions taking into account terrain and temperature and especially if you do not have a lead foot.
i am getting 64 mpg in denver. this is averaged over the last 3000 miles driving 30 min each way to and from work. Denver, i think pushes the prius due to our altitude and swings in daytime night time temperatures. most nights get down into the 40 degree range during the summer but spring and fall sees 30 degree temps nightly.
My second Prius, a 2010 with technology package. About 5000 miles on it. Performance on a recent trip from Houston, TX to Wichita, KS 623 miles, temperature over 100 deg, average speed 55mph using cruise control set on 65mph. MPG gauge read 60.7mpg on arrival. Still had two marks on the fuel gauge. I found the LKA very useful on a trip of this distance.
Same here 36-40 mpg My first tank from the dealer I ran down to half a tank and filled up to take a 230 mile round trip, then on the same tank around town until I had one notch left. I filled up ang calculated 48mpg, the display calculated 50.3 cons. That was the best I have ever got. Since then i have gotten 39.9 41.6 39.1 43.0 36.5 37.3 These are all calculated by me, but the display was allways lower. I have read how to hypermile and have been since the second tank. My tires are at 40lbs. I have called the dealer and spoke to a couple of techs that didnt even know much about the prius, one ask me how many mpg should I be getting. What should I do, the dealer won't seem to do anything unless the check engine lite is on.
I've had my prius for 13 months now, and have attached a graph of my milage (converted to US MPG from L/100KM). The graph shows the "Trip" MPG (at each fillup), and Total MPG, both actual and as reported by the car. I'm in Ottawa Canada, and my workday driving is a 10 minute non-highway commute, and I do occasional freeway driving. My observations from the 1st year: I had no idea there would be such a significant tracking of fuel efficiency to weather/temp, but the graph clearly shows this. I experienced a 37% drop in fuel efficiency from the best of summer to the worst of winter. Obviously in winter it was not just the temperature, but driving in snow, large fuel consumption for heating/defrosting. The accuracy of car calculated mileage to actual varied from 5% off (best mileage) to 11% off (worst mileage) Overall happy with the results, and will keep tracking.
Not sure if it's partly due to the engine breaking in or the warmer weather, but my MPG has been steadily increasing from low 50's MPG a tank to lately 60+. Have 7k miles right now. I had tried the hypermiling for a while when I first got the car, but got tired of needing to be so vigilant. What I have found to be almost as fuel efficient is "pseudo-hypermiling". I quickly accelerate to traffic speed, then back off on the gas so that the HSI bar is just to the right of the midline. The engine does continue to rev and burn gas, but does so at a very low RPM(~1000). I am more comfortable with this technique as I am not sure how "damaging" true hypermiling technique is on the engine over the long run, where the engine continues to shut off and turn back on repeatedly. I know people have said that the car was designed to handle this stress, but with the mileage I can achieve right now I am more than content. This current tank is at 62.2mpg with one bar left on the tank.
35th tank 51.9MPG (Calculated) 53.7MPG (Indicated) VERY Hot temps 80 to 106F 100% ECO Mode. No rainy days. Daily AC use. Unknown ethanol. No grill block. Tony
Just unloaded myself of two SUVs that averaged me 16mpg. Have had my Prius for a little over a week and approximately 470 miles on the first tank. Averaged 51.4mpg. A couple of questions: 1. What PSI are you guys running? I'm getting the general sense that its 40front/38rear (Cold). I've got Bridgestone Ecopias shod. 2. Are most of you mid 50-60mpg guys from flatter states? The undulating terrain of Southern California is a bit tricky. I use the I-210 from La Crescenta into the Valley via the 118 and back. Thanks
I've settled into a steady, 46-50mpg per tank average up here this summer. AC blasting all the time, and lots of hills on backroads and highways, too. I am extremely happy with that number. And it's a big improvement over my winter numbers (right around 40mpg). I'm taking the car to NC and back next month and I'm curious how it'll do once I get to the flat lands. Nothing affects my average number more then hills.
I do a lot of high speed freeway and low speed dirt road driving because I have a bush property. My best over 700 kms was 4.2L/100ks (56 mpg US). My long term average (80,000Ks) is 4.8 (49 mpg US). My worst was 5.2 (45.2 mpg US) over 1000ks in strong winds and near cyclonic rains.
overall (since purchasing the car)= 14366 miles(on 8/1/2011) using 241.024 gallons, calculated at the pump 59.6 mpg, total fuel cost is $753 for E10 gas 87 oct. best tank = 08/01/11, 658 miles, 9.39 gallons of E10, 70.0 mpg, tire pressure 50 psi/48psi, temperature 75F to 90F, mainly hilly urban/suburban driving, 18 mph avg, AC on less than 60 minutes. Worst tank = 12/27/10, 428 miles, 8.18 gallons of E10, 52.3mpg, tire pressure 44 psi/42 psi, temperature 10F to 40F, 100% grill blocking, mainly hilly urban/suburban driving, 18 mph avg
I was averaging about 45 mpg before summer here in Arizona, with the AC on high all the time I have been averaging 38 mpg, overall since ive had the car 1 year and 9K miles is 42 mpg. Hopefully it goes back up in the fall. Oh well still better then the Jeep I had (12 mpg), also I dont baby it and drive in pwr mode most of the time, regular mode is slow and eco is painfully so..
Craig, I get about the same mileage, I am in AZ and its been over 100 since May each day so the A/C is always on high. Plus I dont baby it, i am a bit of of a lead foot and most times run it in Pwr mode.
My overall average (almost 20,000 miles) uphill, downhill, freeways, city driving is about 45 mpg and that is three time better than what I was getting with my Ford F-150.
I was averaging about 50mpg the first 8k miles then I switched to 17 wheels and now I'm averaging about 44mpg. I didn't realize it would drop it down by that much but I'm happy still. The handling is much better and the car has been a bit more fun to drive. 50+ mpg is ideal and with a little tweak in my driving habits, I think I can get there again.....hopefully.
That happens. Mine dropped from 55mpg (trying hard) on 15s to 46.5mpg (trying hard on 17s). It's been this way every time I swap to the 17s. The handling and looks make up for the loss.
Filled up initialy at sea level, on Trip "B", and filled up every 400 miles or so to ascertain if the MPG guage is more accurate after several fillups without reseting trip B everytime I fillup. We were on vacation and I filled up in LaGrande Oregon which is well above Sea Leve,l also climed Deadmans Pass on Rt 84 in Oregon which is well over 4,000 feet. Trip "B" read, 1246.2 miles / used 22.49 gallon of gas, reg with 10% Ethanol, computer read 58.5 mpg / calculated was 55.411 mpg.( just what I thought pretty consistenly off 3 mpg). During our vacation I received the highest MPG's ever. Fillup in LaGrande Oegon to Wallowa Lake in northeastern Oregon. Drove to Imnaha and fished and we caught quite a few nice trout in those streams. Temps ranged from low 50's to 94 degrees. Returned 3 days later to the same gas station in LaGrande Oregon and fillup up. 428.9 miles / 6.823 gal's / calculated 62.860 mpg Vehicle gross weight was probably about 3600 lbs or so, my wife and myself with all the luggage etc. I believe that my tires. Michelin Energy Saver, 195x65x15 also helped, all inflated to 44 psi with Costco Nitrogen.
