I like the new elantra and sonata a lot. Looked at both a couple months back as a replacement for our other car.

I have zero loyalty to S. Korea (my ancestors are Anglo Saxon). I am not the one doing the bashing, just objectively comparing the two manufacturers based on what the industry and media have had to say about their comparative merit over the past several years.

Obviously any criticism of the Prius should be expected to garner a less than warm response in a Prius forum so I will refrain from making any further comments on the subject.

The OP though, seems to be enjoying the Hyundai he has rented. :)

    Thanks guys ;)

OK just a pic of the mpg meter cruising across Louisville on I-64. This is after I filled up and went about 20 miles, just rolling into the big city on my way to a thrift store :)

This seemed real typical of driving on the freeway thru the city. On the return leg we ran into stop & go rush hour and it ended a ~40 mile trip across town & back at a click above 40 mpg. Still decent and 10 mpg under a Prii driven with no special methods.

Spotted quite a few Gen II Prii and some Gen III but again, zero Gen I Prii. I think they are extinct around here :( Would you believe no Salsa Gen II's spotted

More later as I think of something fun to write :p

    From the above:
That's only helpful if you want to do that above. Doesn't help if you sell it yourself, don't want another Hyundai or are outside those time periods.

That's just what I spotted on the Hyundai site ;) That was just some info for that other guy posting above that. I take what I get when it comes to resale time. Whatever the value is then, is what I will get.

    +1,

By the time I have put 100k miles on a car I have been in it close to 3,000 hours. Having enjoyed what I was driving is far more important to me than a bean counter analysis.

    +2 :p

No doubt. A modern car is never an investment. It is what a owner wants it to be. It can be transportation :car: or it can be a passion in driving experience

    Day 5

Cruising around Kentucky in the 2011 Elantra GLS

Update: I have about 1300 miles on the car since leaving home. The #1 thing I am noticing is there are zero squeaks & rattles. Nothing, and I have been on all kinds of roads including gravel  Maybe it is the volcanic rock & soy materials used in the plastic & fabric? Weird ingredients but it sure is a nice interior. Seats have awesome support and fabric seems high quality :)

The car continues to get ~32 mpg city and 40 on the Interstates. It will go higher but sitting in traffic and pre-cooling the car with the A/C takes a hit on the mileage as expected. It's been 85 to 100 degrees down here since we arrived. No mosquitoes though. I need to move :D

As I have said many times already, the audio system is kick butt. The USB port is very handy to have. Cup holders are placed in perfect spots. 4 of them up front and two in the fold down center armrest in the rear.

Spots today: several Gen III, two with solar roof, a pair of Fives ;) and get this, two Gen I's  One of them was hailed out but the other looked decent. The usual Gen II's. No Salsa again :(

So that about wraps it up. I have a couple more stops and another thousand or so miles to go before I get home. I expect the gas mileage to be the same as it has been so far. This car is freakin awesome to drive. I must find a Five to drive or at the very least sit in before I can say yea or nay to one or the other. May or June 2012 is when I head to the store and buy which ever car I decide upon. The wife says I can have whatever I want within reason of course. What makes more economical sense with my ~2k to 7k miles per year driving? I have parked next to Sonata's with the Elantra and do not like that large of a car. The Prii & the Elantra are basically the same size, wheelbase & all. Elantra gets basically 10 mpg less, costs ~$8,800 less than a Five, comparably equipped. It would be cool to own both but that would be silly to spend that much and drive so little miles per year :der:

Thanks for listening, thanks for the advice,
    Mike :tea:

The mix the volcanic rock in so you won't eat the soy interior.

Weird combo for making a green/recycled interior. What does the Prii use? Somethin similar, but I forget what.

As much as you enjoy the Elantra and how little you drive I would go with it. Unless you choose a Prius 3 or4 and simply upgrade the wheels the prices difference is difficult to overcome.

The Prius does haver lower emissions amd saves more fuel so it would get my vote but again, you drive so little I don't think the impact would be much different.

Thanks again for detailing your experience. :)

Is that a Salsa or Barcelona? Salsa seems so rare in our travels. My son's vote today was for the Elantra. He sat in the Limited a few weeks back so he knows what it has. He likes the Elantra audio system. He's 13 years old and you can imagine his music tastes. But he does like Taylor Swift :p We even played the Prius song several times in the Elantra ;)http://we0h.us/MP3/LetYourLoveFlow.mp3 didn't seem the same as would be expected :(

Mine is Salsa. They only made it for 2004-2005. When clean I think the salsa looks much better but when dirty and left to oxidize the barcelona red looks a little better.

Wow only two years in Salsa. The wife & I used to argue what the color was when we first realized there were two shades of red in the Gen II Prii. I called it brown and she called it red :p Now we both call it Salsa ;) Barcelona, we call it red. I think Toyota should offer all the old & new Prii colors on the Gen III.

Or even better, a Prius 3 with the PLUS Performance Package.

One thing for sure if you do get the Elantra, don't expect anybody to pay attention to it.

That plus package looks damn nice. I am done with the look at me cars. I own one now and it sits in the garage more than it sees the light of day. It must run on 92 octane minimum or it will hole a piston faster than a bird can crap on it. It was fun when gas was cheep but not anymore.

Honestly, this Elantra we are driving on this trip has gotten a lot of attention from others. Just like a Prius Five is a head turner, the Elantra is just as sexy looking :p But most people on the road are just driving their transportation and could care less what theirs look like let alone someone next to them.
For others, their car is a passion. I fit that last category
