    Hi Everybody

I am from Bangkok Thailand and have been driving my new Prius III for the past one month. My Prius was assembled in Thailand.

I must say that I have no complaints whatsoever so far. Typical Toyota quality and reliability. However, my only gripe is that I get about 40 MPG as I don't drive very long distances (usually commute to work and back home) and am caught in start/stop traffic situation. Still, 40 MPG is still not too bad...

    Cheers!

    Welcome!

Your short distance driving is why you only get 40mpg. :)

Welcome to PriusChat :welcome: Enjoy the MPGs, technology and low emissions. The Prius engine may not get a chance to warm up during your short commute, thus low MPGs right now. You didn't say how long of a commute in terms of time and miles. Pushy Bangkok traffic may not let you drive for best MPGs.

My drives are pretty short as well and as a result I get lower mileage. I look at it this way it's still better than a regualr ICE car, at least that's what I tell myself

Sawasdee Krub. Nice to meet a fellow Thai.

40 MPG isn't so bad considering traffic in Bangkok is horrendous, 24/7 stop and go traffic.

    Welcome!

I thought Sri Lankan driving was bad. Then I visited Bangkok.

Thanks for the welcome. You are right.

My round trip to and from work is only about 6 miles. During the peak hours, I average only about 6 miles per hour. Hence, my high consumption. On a different note, I have tested my Prius over longer distances and the best result I have obtained so far, is a respectable 49 MPG over a distance of about 20 miles.

The technology is sound and regardless of how you drive, if you compare with a pure ICE, you will definitely enjoy some savings. That, I am pretty convinced.

    สวัสดีครับ สบายดีไหมครับ

:) Actually, I am a Malaysian working in Bangkok. Well, traffic is particularly bad during peak hours. I like to take a leisurely drive during the weekends.

Actually, Prius (and its other sibling, the Camry Hybrid) is selling pretty well in Thailand as the gas prices are definitely getting higher and higher. More and more people are adopting this hybrid technology which is actually pretty good for the environment; especially in Thailand where the emission laws are pretty non existent.

    Hi

Well, in identical situation, ICE car will definitely consume more than the Prius. Also, sub-consciously, we are doing something good for the environment as well... so, yeah, I am pleased with my Prius.

    Hi there Citiboi,
I'm a fellow Malaysian, also living in Bkk. I bought my Prius yesterday, hoping to get it by Monday / Tuesday. It's the Sportiva version. I test drove the Camry as well but the Prius offered a much smoother ride. There was quite a bit of stutter on moving off and coming to a stop in the Camry and worse of all, hardly any boot space.

Let's see what sort of MPG I can get in and around Bkk. It will be a while before I will know as I am pretty much only a weekend driver (better to take the BTS/MRT and taxis in Bkk) and also will be away for 10 days from Wed.

Congratulations on your purchase! Wow!! The Sportiva version too.. Good choice! I stand corrected but I believe the Prius has a brand new ICE and may be different from the Camry Hybrid. Anyway, the Prius is more stylish IMHO.

I am pretty sure you will enjoy driving the Prius as much as I do. From my observation, you will get better mileage when you are able to pulse and glide above 30 kmh (abt 19 mph). When I drive to and from work, I am only able to achieve an average of 10-15 kmh (abt 6-10 mph) and my mileage suffers as a result. Still, I am able to get about 17 km/l (40 mpg)... not too shabby actually.

    Have fun driving!

I don't intend to drive to/fro work as I live less than 2 km and driving would take me 20-30 minutes, depending on what time I leave :)

It will mostly be for weekends exploring and long distance trips and I am hoping to break 20 km/l, given the need to use A/C always and Bkk traffic

Well, have fun driving your Prius. FYI, just by driving within Bangkok (around Rama 3) last weekend, I managed 25 km/l (+/- 10% for error on trip computer) for a stretch of 20 km. My best mileage so far!

Very nice, that's about 58.8 MPG over 12.42 mile (if my calculation doesn't fail me)

Let's see how well you can do around Siam, MBK, and Paragon... :D

You are about right with your calculations. Around Siam, MBK and Paragon on a weekday? Hmm.. I reckon around 35-37 MPG. Still better than a pure ICE car.

I'm getting endless grief on the local Thaivisa Motoring Forum for getting a Prius. Those guys are "carguys" and majority won't be caught dead in a hybrid of course.

Anyhow, picking up my car today and can hardly wait to throw some MPG figures into those guys faces :)

Very uplifting to be reading posts from your part of the world I visited Bangkok and Patia Beach on a 7 day R&R ( rest & recuperation) while stationed in Vietnam about 40 years ago. My one distinct memory was observing the amount of used oil that was simply dumped in the gutter outside the Auto repair shop. I don't imagine this is the case anymore, hopefully! Anyway, a great choice on automobiles and Thankyou for your participation in Priuschat. One day we will all arrive in the perfect world of reasonably cheap transportation, little noise and perfectly clean natural AIR. For right now tho, I am perfectly satisfied with your perfect English. SAWASDEEKRAP

+1 I also did a 7 day R&R while stationed in Okinawa 40 years ago. My memory is the contrast of cosmopolitan Bangkok with kids use street gutter water to bathe, bathroom and more. I also remember a KFC franchise downtown.
