Good post cwerdna. ImgBurn will also tell you the Media ID (ImgBurn have it under Disc ID).

I used Verbatim DVD+R DL with media ID (MKM001) which is a Tier 1 media made in Singapore.

None the less, you typically can't go wrong with either Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.

:doh:You're right. ImgBurn's got it under Discovery/Tools > Discovery as the Manufacturer ID. I've only used the tool to burn AVCHD DVDs I've produced and never bothered looking there, until now.

Yes, usually Taiyo Yuden and Mitsubishi Chemical Corp is good. Unfortunately, Verbatim branded discs aren't always Mitsubishi Chemical Corp.

For those who can't remember the URL I mentioned, just go to digitalFAQ.com | DVD-Video Guides | DVD Media Guides & Reviews.

I got gen 5 9.1 and am burning it now at home (I'm at work)....once I go home for lunch I'll try it out and report back...if it works, whomever wants a copy, I'll start burning copies and sending out.

If it helps, I'm using Memorex DVD+R DL..no idea on the ID...I'm also using Roxy's Toast (Mac) to burn....I wish I still had my PC to do this stuff

Hopefully it works. I have a MacBook Air that's why I have to find someone with a dvd writer to make one. And turns out lots of people are gone for summer

I'm going to try to get ahold of a PC...it's not working burning with my Mac...although I'm not sure if thats the answer, there are ALOT more software packages available for the PC for me to try...this sucks..I've wasted too many DVD DL's for this.... :(

FWIW, I avoid Memorex branded media like the plague because the chances are, they use a crap supplier. That was the case back before w/their CD-R media, before DVD-R and +R media existed.

My earlier post has links to a tool for the Mac that will read the id. I have no experience with it. Toast might even have a means of viewing/extracting it.

Obviously, there's a lot of room for user error, the image itself being bad, write quality depending on the drive, possible variance on how well one's Prius DVD can read burned discs, but at least we can theoretically identify media that's more likely to work or not work.

unfortunately there are way too many variables to pin down with finite decision what will and what won't work. I just hoped to get it working so I can send it out to the masses.

I've never had a problem with memorex when it comes to DVD's and CD's....

I can buy better DVD media but I'm still shooting in the dark nonetheless :(

Really wish I had a Gen5 that I can test out the files on.

Have you tried using just Disk Utility instead of Toast? Somebody else using OSX reported that Toast was burning coasters and he was successful with just Disk Utility.

Agreed. There are MANY variables, some of which aren't the easiest/convenient to change. However, crap/unreadable media will mean that no matter what of the other variables you choose will be wasted effort and potentially more wasted time tinkering.

I've always shied away from Memorex even before I knew about the media codes when my friend burned some music CD-Rs and they didn't work well in his car (Honda OEM stereo, which was made by Alpine). He mentioned Memorex, to which I laughed. He switched to some other CD-Rs and that solved the problem.

Problem is we don't know if the file itself is the problem, or the burning :(

it could be the file, the media, the drive, the burning process, etc...

there's no baseline to really compare it to besides a new OEM disc for $200... :(

If you put your burned disk into a Toyota or Lexus vehicle with a matching gen 5 nav system, I would wager it would work. If you were able to do this test it would prove if the disk is good or bad.

FWIW, burned the Gen 5, 9.1 to a DVD-R DL (Verbatim) using the Mac finder. No Go :(

I would believe that....I found most "other than PC applications" (meaning anything besides a DVD-ROM drive in a PC) will not read DVD-R's. DVD+R's was a different story.

hmmm......anyone tried to make a copy of an OEM disk?

Hahahhaha, I was rerouted into 1 hour Indiana country Indiana road yesterday using the old version. Was so worried that I got into roads that could not be travelled after so deep inside with only 3 pips left in my tank. Was even worried when I met an Amish carriage when I was so deep :p

yeah that doesn't happen so much in NY. All of our roads have been built for years and years...it's the POI updates that I really need.
