Dealer serious about nitrogen tires!

You mean Nitrogen is like religion, takes a leap of faith?

If you leave the tires on year round Nitrogen is good, no air loss for two or three years, if you switch summer and winter tires on the same rims it's sorta' impractical, especially at 50$ a pop.

Now religion on the other hand...

I wonder if they will fill your tires with with 80% nitrogen (regular air) for only $40. What a scam!!!

 

That dealer is serious about ripping off its customers...pretty amazing to see the charge of $50 for basically nothing. Not sure why you blacked out the dealer's name - we should see who is employing that business practice.

If you really want N2 in your tires, just buy the next set from Costco and it will be provided at no additional charge.

I have to admit, I somewhat admire the sheer audacity of offering the whole scam as a "coupon"...like that is a "savings". Gee I wonder how much they charge without the coupon?

 

If you use different front/rear pressures and you rotate your tires you'll have to adjust pressures each time.

Anyway, during the year you should be adjusting your tire pressure based on typical temperatures.

It's a bit better to have it, but it's a very expensive thing to do. It's best left to MB and Beemer drivers who don't mind overpriced maintenance.

If I understand what you are saying, your message is that a normal air mixture leaks from the tire more easily than nitrogen does. If that were true, everyone's tires would, over time, be filled with an ever-increasing percentage of nitrogen as the other constituents of air (mostly oxygen) leaked out and were replaced with 80% nitrogen.

If you can cite any study that shows that nitrogen leaks out of tires at a slower rate than normal air, please let us in on it.

 

Rubbish on both counts. At least religion has the potential to make people feel good and inspire them to better behavior. Nitrogen, on the other hand, will only transfer money from your wallet to the dealer.

My local Toyota dealer is offering it too. $40 for 4 tires. Wow. At least it's not $50 I suppose. They're not pushing it either, but there is a sign up in the shop saying they do it.

P.S. I use a bicycle pump when I'm not lazy. Takes a few minutes, but it works. I think the dealer sets it at 33 IIRC (with air of course), but I tend to run at 35 and 37. However, if I'm feeling lazy, I just leave it at whatever the dealer sets it at.

 

The good news is that those dealers are de facto confessing to all but their more technically obtuse customers that the dealers are slimeballs and will screw over their customers at the drop of a hat.

 

$50 for nitrogen? What a deal!

When we purchased our Prius, the dealer had a $100 charge on the sales order for nitrogen. When I pointed out that Costco included it for free with their tires that line was eliminated very quickly.

I do know from experience with another car that the air pressure was much more consistent with nitrogen than without. I replaced a set of Michelin tires from Costco with the identical model filled with nitrogen. When I checked the pressures after the replacement, the nitrogen-filled tires needed air less often, and needed less air when adjustment was necessary. While not a scientific sample, I did see a positive effect.

In summary, I'll be glad to have my tires filled with nitrogen, but I won't pay extra for the feature.

 

You could also use helium, it would make your car lighter but it would leak way too quickly.

Why not argon? From what the auto dealers point out, argon would excel over nitrogen. They could also charge $100.

Then again good old air with 80%+/- nitrogen may work really well too. :car:

True that, when rotating tires you have to change pressures, I run 36lb on all 4, the gas is free when purchasing new tires, ran it in a set of P2's, got three years(in NH, 1/2 year usage) out of them never lost a pound, actually the P2's were at 40lb's and were worn out in the center of the tire while the edges had 1/5th- of their tread left, have adjusted to real life conditions by changing to 36lb's.
My winter tires run compressed air, have to add more once a month, just sayin...I'd rather adapt to present reality than adopt obtuse conformity.

 

Our new Hyundai Sonata came with nitrogen filled tires (green cap) at no extra charge. Seems that they have an overly sensitive TPMS and they want to stop returns to dealers for that problem.

 

The positive effect is well documented. It's called "the placebo effect".

I think that the advantage of using nitrogen is that the tires don't heat up as much as they do with plain ol' air, thus maintaining a more even pressure as the coupon claims. That doesn't mean it is worth any major money, however. As for going for two or three years without adjusting the pressure? Sorry, I don't buy it. This reminds me of a story my dad told me about a guy he knew who kept bragging about the fantastic mileage he was getting on his new VW. But his coworkers were sneaking in an extra gallon now and then, playing with his mind. (Of course gas was about two bits a gallon at the time.) Somebody must have been adding air/nitrogen when the car was serviced. Costco adds it when they rotate my tires. They also sometimes fill my portable air tank with nitrogen, again at no charge. That dealer is just making money off gullible people.
