Looks like Toyota will replace pinion nuts free of charge. Toyota Recalls Older Prius Cars To Fix Steering - Driver's Seat - WSJ

Mine is involved. It looks like Toyota will be reimbursing you if you had made repairs to fix this issue previously. If you have an olde-thyme Prius it is worth checking to see if your VIN is involved.
Well, I had the recall done at Russ Darrow Toyota in West Bend, Wis. Inexplicably, it took two trips -- I made the first appointment a week in advance telling the service adviser I wanted the recall done. Wife took the car in and learned that Darrow did not have the necessary parts in stock! I guess a week's notice wasn't enough for them to get their act together. Once there for the second visit, the car stayed overnight as it took six hours of labor to do the job. Darrow provided a Corolla for a loaner, a nice gesture.
We just had ours done by Northridge Toyota. Mine took longer than hers (probably about 2 days, not sure because it was in having a scratched MFD screen replaced, which took over 2 weeks ), because the original fix didn't pass muster on their test drive, so they replaced the entire rack and pinion assembly at Toyota's expense. Still, we're impressed that Toyota would even bother with a recall for a 10-year-old car. It's nice to know they're still looking after us oldsters, er, pioneers. :cheer2:
