IIRC GM calculated its lease cost based on 45% depreciation. If KBB is right, GM will lose $5,300 on the depreciation alone.

 

Really? Is KBB pretty accurate with depreciation estimates? I will buy that car for even 20k, unless the Prius comes out with a 40mile plugin.

 

Most of them will be sold to GE (bailed out company) or government agencies so tax payers will take a big hit. Good luck to those household that bought it instead of leasing it.

If you happen to be a purchaser that got advantage of the $7500 tax credit that is 51% residual, better than prius

 

When I bought, the Prius residuals on 36k leases were 70%-80% of purchase price, depending on how low you could negotiate the cap cost.

 

Thats a good deal, KBB (the source quoted for the Volt info) puts it much lower:

"2011 Toyota Prius, the industry's best known hybrid, has a projected residual of 46% after 36 months, Kelley says. The 2011 Ford Focus' residual is projected at 37.5%."

 

I'm calculating on purchase price, so maybe I should include tax, license reg, delivery, doc fees, etc.? Tax here is almost 10%.

BTW I think those numbers are wrong. 36k mile Gen III Prii are going for much more these days.

 

I don't know one way or another, seems like an awful lot of guesswork for everybody right now.

 

Resale price is what you get for it...it's just like Pawn Stars, something isn't worth xx,xxx if someone will only pay x,xxx for it.

If the Volt turns out reliable it will be worth more money, if it ends up being a dog, it will probably get EV1'd.

 

That's how some much hype for Volt came about in the first place.

My 2009 pk 5 Prius resold by me private party for 67% of sticker price (18.5/27.574) at 14,850 miles and 29 months old.

 

At $17K I'll buy 10. That is a really good price on a used volt. Depreciated prices on new cars are unpredictable, but I doubt KBB actually had a qualified analyst look at supply and demand at all. Because of the unpredictability and price, Leasing is the only way I would buy a volt, or, leaf, or prius phv.

 

It's not just battery life, but the future competition.

By 2014 there should be a bunch of other BEVs and PHEVs available, as well as a 2nd Gen Volt.

 

Sure, unpredictable, but there will not be many 35 mile plug in cars with 5 year warenty and low miles available. Used 2011 volts and leafs will will be the only ones available for around $20K, so if you look at projected supply and demand, $17K price for at most a supply of 10K cars in the country is crazy low.

 

Really? I would have thought it would lose that value on one year, not three.

 

Yes some gov't agencies here in DC area (not sure if state or feds) have been talking on the radio about getting Volts.
