CR is about as objective as you can get out there--they don't take advertising. You can't really trust the mainstream media on anything these days because of advertising. The sponsors run the show.

The Highlander is a big bus. The Escape is more reasonable size--if you have to have an SUV. The 4x2 Escape will do in the mid 30s mpg. Check the reviews in msn.com cars, where owners tell you the mileage they are getting. That's the best source for mileage data.

CR changed their tone a bit after the government's hatchet job on Toyota. Any American criticism of the Prius must now be taken with a grain of salt. My Toyota dealer wants to saw off my accerator pedal every time I get an oil change. I just laugh at them. They know the score, too.

Advertising is but one source of potential bias. Other magazines seem to find ways to be critical of sponsors. Plus, in many of them, just about every manufacturer is a past, current or potential sponsor.

If CR is as objective as you can get like you say, which would you think is more accurate: CR's test track fuel economy measurements and overall ratings, or accounts on MSN.com that are unverfied, performed under a variety of weather and maintenance conditions and subject to the biases of the owners and non-owners that submit them?
