Got my best mileage yet this weekend, Windsor VT to Cornish ME, 58mpg indicated for the 125 mile trip. After a few days of zipping around Portland, then the trip home, it's sitting at 55.5 indicated.

Trip had only a short strip of highway, mostly 35mph-55mph 2 lane, plenty of hills, nice weather. I was being pedal-smart, but not going slow, I actually passed a couple people. :)

54.1 (Calculated). This is actually for 25,000+ miles. I did not keep track of the 2010 miles specifically; this is total from new (June 2009).

On 4/29/11, I filled the gas tank of my 2010 Toyota Prius III with 9.077 gallons
of 87 oct regular gas (E10) after driving 598.9 miles which calculates to 65.98
    miles per gallon.

The outside temperature climbed over 65 Fahrenheit so the gasoline engine is now running efficiently. I've over inflated the Yokohama Avid S33 tires to 47 psi front and 44 psi rear so the tires has a lower rolling resistance for extended "gliding." In
addition, I am synchronizing my *pulsing* with downhill grades more frequently in each "Pulse and Glide" cycle - which is crucial to bumping up the speed for the lowest energy cost when driving in the hilly terrain. I am using a scangauge II to monitor the gasoline consumption - I am trying to limit the Prius usage to a maximum of 1.10 gallons per hour whenever possible.

    Thank you for the data.
I believe the averaging the individual errors is not accurate because it cannot be adjusted the individual fill up levels.
I think the lifetime accumulated numbers can be more accurate.

    Newbie here -

Bought the 2011 Prius on April 28. Today (May 11), it turned over 500 miles. I filled up last week when it was down a half tank. Since then, I am getting between 56.6 and 57 mpg on my daily driving. We're in the Piedmont of NC: hills, including one fairly steep one between home and any other place. Lovely spring weather, mostly 70-80 degree days.

Passing the local gas station at 3.909 per gallon makes me cringe and smile at the same time.

I have a couple of esoteric questions - will post under appropriate headings.

    Hello everyone,

I have a 2010 prius that is only averaging 43-45mpg and about 430 miles per tank. My daily commute is about 90 miles and find it surprising that I don't even average close to the 48/52 mpg that is stated. I use the eco mode once im on the freeway and always try my best to conserve my gas to gain the most mpg however it doesn't seem to be working. I've mentioned it to the dealership and they have ran tests and can't find anything wrong with the car. Also when i fill up my tank on the car the mileage to empty is only about 456. Does anyone have the same problems or have a suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    1. check your tire pressure. Low tire pressure will increase the tire's rolling resistance and decrease the Prius's MPG. To maximize your MPG overinflate the tire pressure by about 30% ( which for Yokohama Avid S33 is 44 psi front and 42 psi rear).

    2. limit your top speed to 60 mph on the freeway - if you find this difficult to do manually then use cruise control . The Prius should be able to get about 57 mpg calculated( 61 mpg via MFD) at 60 mph or 63 mpg calculated (67 mpg via MFD) at about 53 mph.
Without a tailwind ( the wind pushing from behind the car as it is driving forward), wind resistance starts to reduce the Prius FE slowly at 45 mph and then increases exponentially at about 60 to 65 mph. giving yourself enough time to travel is half the battle when it comes to fuel efficiency. Drivers who are short on time tend to do jackrabbit starts and race to the red traffic lights - which kill the MPGs on any car.

    3. Synchronize your accelerations on the freeway when the Prius is on a flat grade or downhill grade. Donot try to accelerate on the freeway during a uphill grade - the Prius doesn't have much extra torque so its more efficent when accelerating on a downhill. If you have a long uphill grades greater than 10% you need to increase the Prius's velocity before you start at foot/bottom of the uphill grade.

    4. Drive when the temperature is above 65 F if at all possible - cold temperatures can reduce the Prius ICE efficiency signficantly. Drive your 90 mile commute continuously without turning the Prius off to avoid paying for the ICE startup/warmup penalty more than once.

    hope this helps

My first guess is it's your driving style. Based on where you live, there may not be much you can do to alter it though if you want to keep with the traffic patterns. A little more information of your commute, including idling time, stops along the way, hills, speed, etc. To keep up with traffic, especially in stop/go, if you have to mash the throttle due to using Eco mode, Eco won't help much. I use Normal mode and average 50-52 mpg.

I have over 33,000 miles on my odometer. I moved to central Florida last summer and especially during the winter, I consistently experienced better than 60 mpg although that was harder to maintain last summer during the air conditioning "season" but it's still better than what I was experiencing in central Indiana which has similar terrain, but very different climate. Of course, I can't drive as fast as most of the Floridians, but I do manage to stay with the flow of traffic and still get this fuel economy.

With my first-generation, I never got much better than 50 mpg and only got 45 mpg after I gave up low rolling resistance tires to get better wear. The stock tires on my 2010 seem to be wearing much better than those on my 2001.

3211 miles on my 2011, and I pumped 9.03 gallons into it after 503 miles. That's just over 55.7 mpg. My overall is about 51 mpg.
I think I am finally getting the hang of this vehicle.
Though trying to pulse and glide around here is difficult, it's not impossible. It's tough when you live in an area with very old hilly roads, such as we have here in the Hudson Valley in NY.
My driving is about 50-50 city/highway.
I can't describe how thrilled I am with this car. The mileage alone is incredible!

    Latest fill up:
    Miles on tank: 687.4
    HSI MPG: 58.2
    Calculated MPG: 54.63
Gallons to fill, including complete top off: 12.583

Based on Bob Wilson's "run it out of fuel" tests revealing 2.1 gallons remaining when last bar starts flashing, I really pushed it on this tank, due in large part to an unexpected last second trip. It started flashing at 595 miles and I drove another 92.4 miles before filling up. I did throw a 2 gallon can of gas in the car near the end and about 40 of the miles after it started flashing were high MPG driving at 40 - 45 MPH with long stretches between lights.

I have a new 2011 Prius III with almost 5,000 miles and am presently averaging 58 mpg highway and 52 city driving the roads and highways of west Michigan.

During the cold 20-30 degree weather of early March 2011, after buying the new Prius, I was getting about 47-49 mpg city & highway. The warmer weather has resulted in a great improvement in both the city and highway MPGs, I'm very happy so far!

I just got a 2011 Prius Two, and have filled it once so far. Calculated MPG was 58.0mpg (515 miles, two pips left) but that assumes that the dealer filled it full (mpg would be higher if he didn't top it off). I didn't get the HSI reading but I think it was around 60mpg, so hopefully the MPG exaggeration on my HIS isn't too bad??

Yesterday I drove the 133 miles from my home in CT to Boston, and the HSI showed 72.5mpg average for the trip. Conditions were:
    - temp 70F
    - no wind (flags along the turnpike hanging limp)
    - speeds 47-50mph
    - start and end near sea level

Same trip the other way a week before gave 62.5mpg on the HSI, so hopefully I'm learning the car better.
