Google reveals:

P0A94 554 Boost converter fail (FCV) signal detection (over current by HV control ECU malfunction)
P0A94 555 Boost converter fail (FCV) signal detection (over current by inverter assembly malfunction)
P0A94 556 Boost converter fail (FCV) signal detection (over current by HV transaxle assembly malfunction)

 

So for less complex folks like myself. Basically to much power made car go poop! Could that be due to failing system and her boyfriend reaming the poop out of her car?

 

The header description for that section of three codes states:

The boost converter is what steps ups a lower DC voltage to a higher DC voltage. For instance, from what the battery provides (201.6) to what the inverter uses (500V). Or from what MG1 generates to what inverter uses.

EV Mode:
Battery DC 201.6 V -> Boost Converter -> DC (500 V) -> Inverter -> AC (Variable Voltage, Variable Frequency) -> AC Synchronous Motor (MG2 or MG1)

Hybrid Mode:
MG1 -> AC (Variable) -> Rectifier -> DC -> Boost/Buck -> DC 500V -> Inverter -> AC (Variable) -> AC Motor (MG2)

Or at least that's how it works in general. The Prius may do things slightly differently.

 

I'm no Prius techie, but I know that code. I'm sorry to hear it.

 

Cheer up. A salvaged part may not be that much. Hopefully someone else will know exactly what to do.

Warranty or not, you'd have to go through quite a few used ones to equal the price of a new part. A repair that's nearly 50% of the car's worth doesn't make a lot of sense. Even if the bank of Dad is paying for it.

 

A place called Auto Be Yours has a good reputation around here. They'd likely have the part you need, for far less than a new one. I have no idea what their warranty policy is on used parts, but I'm guessing they could at least make sure it works before it leaves their shop.


edit: It's a fascinating website. There's another stretch limo in the works!

 

Many junkyards will warrant parts for 90 days - 1 year. LKQ Gulf Coast has two in stock for $300 each. It won't cover labor though. The Toyota warranty on the replacement is only 1 year as well.

 

I'd second the recommendation by Hyo above. All I've read on this site about Autobeyours has been very positive. He's been in business quite awhile If it were my car I'd do this: DISCOUNTED INSURANCE SALVAGE

 

He might fix yours, or send you a different one, but generally, yes. The working parts of your old one can be reused, so it has some value.
