Are you referring to $25/mo for Virgin Mobile's unlimited texting and data with 300 voice minutes? If so, are you claiming that Tracfone or AT&T provide all of this for 1/3 the cost?

I've looked into AT&T prepaid before and the prices weren't competitive. Even the AT&T store rep admitted that.

    Virgin Mobile uses Sprint's network.

OK, so the Internet access for your phone costs less than the cost of XM? Who's the provider, and how do I sign up?

I use a charger, but it can't keep up with the draw of the 3g and BT

Nor can I on my Palm Pre!

I was thinking of using a small power inverter, like about 50 watts to use 110, but I am not sure if it will damage the internals. I have used it on other cars, but the Prius is a different animal.

I haven't noticed that my charger can't keep up with the draw for 3G and BT. Makes me wonder if there's something wrong with your phones or charger.

If the phone's an iPhone, if it's getting too warm, it may not charge. See iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch (4th generation): Keeping device within acceptable operating temperatures.

I war drive for points (the app has since been pulled from the App Store :() so it leaves the display, Wi-Fi, GPS along w/transmitting and receiving data a fair amount of the time, so my phone heats up and usually won't charge or charge much. If I don't use my car charger while war driving, the battery will definitely run down very quickly.

(I confirmed that my old phone, an iPhone 3G while go from full to 20% warning in <2 hours while running this.)

I use some of these apps during my commute since I'm not a fan of the available terrestrial stations. I use a Bluetooth audio gateway (no JBL) so I don't need to plug the aux cable into my phone and I have a 2.1A charger for the afternoons if my phone is getting low on charge. 2.1A allows for fast charging of devices.

    BlackBerry Bluetooth Stereo Gateway

Kensington K33497US PowerBolt Duo Car Charger

I can't post links due to my low post count but if you shop around you can be at $50 total invested and for that, I'm pretty content.

Sorry for the poor wording, I was comparing it to the household's current voice plans at $100/year (plus sales tax). Nothing in this house is budgeted by the month. And as low volume users of mobile service, we are not yet willing to pay for unlimited anything.

The ATT choice is a legacy from years ago. The original company has been merged out of existence, and the prepaid coverage map was slashed when the AMPS and TDMA systems were shut down and service shifted to GSM. If the pain of moving a phone number to another carrier is small enough, then this plan's days are numbered.

Virgin's Pacific Northwest coverage map has improved since I first heard of it, but remains pathetic next to even ATT's limited prepaid map. It will be great for some -- mostly urban customers in the other half of the country. I spent last weekend an area where ATT and Tracfone had excellent signals, but Virgin has just white space.
