I'd hate to have that glass flying into my face during a head-on crash. I wonder if regular plex would be reflective enough to be effective. Or maybe some kind of stretched partially silvered mylar could do the trick.

I tried a tinted Plexiglass sheet (which did not work very well at all) before moving on to this half-silvered Plexiglass sheet. I agree a piece of glass turning into a projectile during a collision would not be fun.

Ah, good that is it half silvered plex. I assumed it was glass.

This product look really awesome!I think this would be a great product to put on a 7" screen just under the steering wheel like Mrbig did with is carputer. Any chance this software is ready to be released for a donation?

Thanks for the interest. I still have a lot of work to do to clean it up though.

The progress has been slow. I think I will just open source it - then it does not need to be neat and pretty, right?

Could someone recommend a good open source website that can host this project for free and also will not go out of business in the next few years? (One of my free e-mail providers just sent a notice saying they are discontinuing the service. Ouch!)

I can open a dedicated subdirectory in our LIPOG.org website for this application if you will.

Thanks for the offering! A closed forum (need registration to enter) has its advantages and disadvantages. Let me think about it. Thanks again!

This is an interesting project. What language was it written in?

How fast do the values update? I may consider purchasing the hardware with bluetooth. I have a netbook with 1024x600 resolution. Would all the gauges fit?

If the value comes from passive messages (info already present on the CAN bus without querying) then it updates as soon as there is a new value posted (up to the USB latency time I guess). Speed, HV battery current, and engine RPM all come from passive messages and they update very fast. For example during glide I can move my foot up and down slightly on the gas pedal and see the HV current following immediately. If the value needs querying then it depends on how often we do the query. Currently I send out a query every 0.2 sec, but there are many values being queried at different frequencies depending on how often I am interested in seeing them - slowly varying values don't need to be queried very often.

I have migrated to an ASUS Eee PC netbook with 1024x600 and the gauges fits fine. (guess why :)) I took some pictures but haven't got time to post yet. Will do soon. Thanks for the interest!

Damn. You are making me want to buy the thing! Can't wait to see the pictures in netbook resolution! A video in action would be awesome.

I want to help you with beta testing. I have ideas to make it a truely unique Prius enthusiast-centric application.

Thanks for the interests! That gives me some more motivation to get it out as soon as possible. I plan to open source it.

Indeed. Short-term temps can spike quite high at unexpected times. Maybe Toyota engineers really did know what they were doing.
