My PHEV PRIUS Test: Apples vs Oranges

    Very interesting link! it suggests that if the Volt had just enough battery for a 14 mile range it would achieve much better fuel economy in CS mode, namely 38.7MPG. Oh. It also says if the Prius PHV upped to 40 mile range it would get 48.2MPG in CS mode.

    I do think the PHV should be ~8kwh, and offer 20-25 miles range.

    aftermarket will always be here, but cant help but feel that OEM options would be more efficient overall since weight is such a huge issue.

    i guess maybe i am looking for a smaller car with a bigger battery pack. i think that GM got it right in that the ultimate extended range hybrid (definitely not EV as they state) would be 40 miles. that is the break point. 40 miles is where greater than 51% of us reside.

    now, granted average commutes do not equate to average daily driving. and we have too many non commuters lowering the average. but we cannot ignore the many Volt drivers that are getting 100+ mpg

    The greater the battery, the greater the costs.
    Each driver should carefully check and assess its commute before jumping into a PHEV.
    European-like are much shorter than US, typically.

    OH! Sorry for the delay . . . but likes/dislikes will vary between driver's needs. My personal dislike about the Leaf was the cheep carpet, and the head rests that were as big as stop signs ... blocking rear view - and I'm 6'-5" !! The PHEV Prius ... well ... nothing ... except that dang Gen III shifter console. But that's not particular to the Gen III PHEV - rather personal preference of the design of the Gen III. Who knows ... maybe the proof of concept PHEV will be significantly different from the production version.

    Am I reading this right? it looks like 3.5 mile for the 79.6mpg with a depleted Lithium EV packs.

    Edmunds Insideline stated that the Prius PHV with a depleted EV battery was far more efficient than the regular prius!

    Since the HV mode of the Prius Plug-in is now using Lithium, do you know of any extensive test for mileage of the Prius PHV with depleted EV battery and may we see an increase of the 51/48 for HV mode!
