Yeah, you'd think, eh? Not good. Well, it's your car, and your life. You should be driving. :)

If something just happened to go wrong while somebody else was driving, or the problem was due to a maintenance issue, then it's not the driver's fault. But if their driving style caused the problem, then yes, I'd say it's his fault. At least ask him to pay for the damage he caused before you follow everybody's helpful relationship advice. ;)

Your boyfriend sounds like an a hole. Someone I would not get along with, and I get along with a lot of people.

He could have meant HV ECU (Hybrid Vehicle Engine Control Unit)

That's because he feels bad that your car gets *3 times* the mileage his does. His treating your car that way is his attempt to even up the playing field. Too bad your car still gets 2 times the mileage when driven like a race car :)

So since he broke it, is he paying the $500 it cost you to fix it?

Haha! Me too. I grew up in California, don't have a truck, don't abuse my 06 Prius and it's not even past 55K miles. ;)

But then again... we have a lot of male Prius drivers here.

Maybe I should make a boyfriend application.

It'd be cool being like "Honey, lets take your Prius today.".. "No, lets take yours!" lol

I see that being quite popular, for some strange reason. :p

Start writing your list of likes and dislikes, and be *very* fussy.

I think I've lost track of which is the topic and which is the distraction, but...I hope you'll tell us more about the car when you get it back.

If the HV ECU had failed, my guess is that the dealer price to remove it and install a new unit would be a low four-digit price. I hope the OP will post the part number / description when she gets the car back.

(The OP doesn't need yet another opinion about her BF's behavior so I will refrain from posting on that topic.)

Oh well... I guess it's a mystery until the OP gets the work order and/or invoice.

    Thanks patrick.

OP, don't let them do anything without reviewing the work order and signing off on each item :)

They called today and said they have to tear the car apart to find out what else is wrong with it. They aren't charging labor to look for a problem though, which is good. They installed a new HV ECU so that's good.

Hopefully this isn't a case of the dealer was wrong so they're charging you for part A when in fact it only needed part B and now your stuck paying for both.

Absolutely insist that you get any defective parts back. I always do this because I've had enough instances in the past(when I actually went to dealers to get things fixed) where the dealer kept replacing the wrong part until the finally got to the real problem. The problem is they will always tell you all the parts were needed because the last thing they want to do is eat the labor it took to install it.

If you have the parts, they'll think twice because they don't know that you won't have the part verified as bad by most likely re-installing.

This sounds like the beginnings of a disaster. I don't believe for a minute that you could have the HV ECU and something else go wrong. They better put the old one back in and not charge your for it. Press them hard for the codes, including the three digit information codes, and post them here.

Will they still have the old part and is it legal for me to take it?? They changed it today and I haven't gotten my car back yet so they might have already disposed of it... :(

So, they might of just thought it was the HV ECU so they replaced that but then discovered something else...?? Ugh!

If they just changed it, then they should still have it. However, even if they do, they may claim they already got rid of it. Yes it's legal for you to take it. In fact, at the time the service contract is signed, if you request they give you back all removed parts, they must do so by law unless the replaced part was under warranty. In that case they don't have to.

The standard powertrain warranty should be 5 years and 60K.

Also, many of the hybrid components are covered under a federal 8 year 100K warranty. If yours is a California car, then it's 10 years 150K. I wouldn't be surprised if the ECU they replaced is under warranty, but I'm sure there are others on this board that can answer that better.
