So my boyfriend and I needed to drive to his sisters house about 30 miles away and we took my Prius. I've been having a problem with the cat converter but it hasn't been that bad. Today my boyfriend decided to get angry at traffic and a train and slow drivers while he was driving it that he started acting like my car was from the Fast & Furious movies....flooring it at 0mph and slamming on the brakes and all that...

Well all of a sudden every single exclamation point possible came on. The brake light, big red exclamation point, smaller one to the right of it, check engine light...and also the car with the exclamation point on the inside showed up on my screen. He tried driving it still (wouldnt listen to me) and the car only got up to 24, then completely died...so we had to push it to the side of the road.

So I have a feeling I need to completely replace the cat converter now...and something involving the brakes?? He pressed them while the car was parked and I heard this weird sound from under the car...

Anyway, hopefully the ones that have helped with my cat problem chime in here...because you're all so smart....and now, I am sad... lol:(

You may have more than a cat converter problem. You could have also lost the inverter coolant pump. Trying to drive after all of the warning lights came on may have fried the inverter.

That's not good news all around - the car or the boyfriend. I'll leave the relationship stuff to your good judgement, but it sounds like your car needs a trip to the dealer. The news is not likely to be good, though in these cases getting a second opinion is probably a wise thing to do.

Second hand parts would be significantly cheaper - general question: where is the AutoBeYours fellow located?

And the worst thing is, if you don't have a Prius any more, I'm not sure we can let you in here.

(Sorry, I'm totally teasing on that last one.) ;)

Have some Easter chocolate. Let us know how things turn out.

We didn't have that great of an Easter either, my wife backed her HS250h into my son-in-law's suburban! No damage to the Suburban, but it dented the trunk lid, scratched the spoiler, scratched the bumper, and totaled one of the back-up sensors on her new car! She was absolutely sick about it. Granted, it can all be fixed, but it did ruin Easter...

Sorry to hear of your misfortune as well, hopefully it will be a quick, easy fix and you'll be back on the road in no time!

It you're using the original battery all the warning light can come on or even weirder things might happen, this is good news, get a yellow topped optima with fit kit and enjoy another 100,000 miles.

If the car won't start, remove the negative terminal on the 12 volt battery for a minute. This will reset the computers, and try it again. You may need a new 12 v battery, but it should not cause that problem when the car is running.

After some dealer work and a few bucks, your car will be fine.

With luck, your next boyfriend will treat your stuff with the respect you deserve.

I can't believe that you are still even speaking to a person who treats you like that. Do you have no self-respect? You should have "kicked him to the curb" before he started treating you and yours like this....if he's this abusive to your car..the next time he will be loosing his temper and punching you, or worse. This guy is a tremendous "LOSER" and has definite anger management problems. If he treats your car like this when you're asking him to stop, what does he do when you're not around. He pays no attention to what you want or need him to do......this is a prescription for sadness and possible future danger. GET RID OF HIM. NOW!!!!! and then get your car fixed and maybe it will stay fixed after he isn't damaging it any more.......which he probably has when driving it before now.....

take the advice of me and your mother-------get rid of tha bum!

The "got to 24 then died completely" sounds like inverter cooling pump failure followed by 12V battery failure. If the 12V died, all codes except chassis will be erased, but it could be driven a ways before the coolant overheats and the cycle repeats. First thing would be to read the voltage on the 12V battery.

My car did the same thing on Thursday and the dealership says I need a whole new transmission and it's $4000.00 dollars! I am freaking out!

Are they going to retrofit a TH400 in there because you don't have a transmission. lol

Melissa, I would follow the suggestion about having the dealer or another shop run the car for codes and see what has failed. If you can report back to this thread with the codes, the gurus like Patrick can roughly diagnose the situation and help guide you to the least expensive solutions. I'm thinking all his hot rodding of the car exacerbated the issue with the catalytic converter and that is why the car flipped out. I had a similar issue with my 2000 Trans Am when it was still new. It had a clogged cat and started throwing up codes and a flashing light. I'm crossing my fingers your situation is milder than it first appears. :) Happy Easter.

Which error codes were recorded by the dealership? This is very important for both your state of mind, to make sure the dealer is treating your car accurately and to let Melissa know that it actually is the same problem. It's your car and the dealer had to pull the codes to diagnose what needs to be fixed. So don't feel bad or shy about asking for the codes. Post them here when you get them so Melissa can compare.

    Good luck.

In these situations a Scangauge2 comes in handy. You can pull the codes yourself and compare them to the dealer's code list.

A salvage trans can be installed for around $2,000. Reputable shops will give a warranty anywhere from 90 days to 1 year. There is one from a 2009 for $700 at American Auto Recycling in Gilbert, AZ, for example. It is about $1,000 in labor for installation.

There are several members of Prius Chat that live in the Phx-Tucson area, including one of the best and most knowledgeable, Patrick Wong. Perhaps they can comment on the quality of the service department where your car is at now, if you will make that known, and make suggestions for a place to install a salvage trans, if you decide to go that route.

Please post your diagnostic trouble codes (i.e. P0A90) and demand from your service advisor any/all associated 3 digit information codes associated with each P code.
