See, that just needs to be stickied: "Stop the car, and get out, BEFORE hugging trees."

How long before TPFun comes by to point out that if it was a GM car it could not have been started even with the keys, thus saving the man's life?

The bad news is the Prius was destroyed.

The good news is that it was delivering excellent fuel economy at the time of the crash.

haha probably yes:) but fortunately now they didn't even mention it was a prius, they just called it "man in stolen car dies". But obviously it is a prius, or at least, it WAS a prius:rolleyes:

I was out of town for 5 weeks last Nov/Dec, so I gave my keys to my cousin and parked the Prius near his apartment. I asked him to start the car once a week so the battery doesn't die out. He has driven my car a couple of times before as a "student driver".

He emails me two weeks in saying the car doesn't start. I emailed back asking if he had pressed the brakes when pressing the start button.

When I came back, he told me that my car will never be stolen.

IMO, no his life wasn't worth the Prius. His estate should have to pay for the Prius.

Prius and many new cars have engine immobilizer. I understand thefts of those kind of cars have decreased significantly, except in this case :(

What case? The burglar stole the key and used it to start the engine.

Going to the dealers on Wednesday 27th, so will report after that. The car has been subjected to a hard weekend of work and hasn't displayed a problem since that first couple times.

The window test does seem to have improved so whether the 12v was changed I don't know. I had previously been working nights so perhaps a weak or marginal 12v was just over worked and caused the problem?

But I'll report back when I know.

There is no way the Prius could outrun the motorcycle. However. Dutch Police will stop pursuing once the driver starts endangering others (such as when speeding excessively in town). The thief will be apprehended later.

... unless he tries to mate the car with a tree.

Maybe the Prius sensed the erratic driving and went into Unintended Accelleration mode

No, he was trying to get away from police before the HV battery died on him. They need to be replaced every 314 miles ya know... ;)

If he stole a VW diesel instead, this would have never happened. They don't need HV batteries.
