I was planning to buy this week, and I'm reading to see if there's anything I have missed before purchasing. The key issue is something I hadn't thought about and it gives me pause.

Can you leave the Prius unlocked or must you carry the fob or key or whatever all the time?

Is there any edition of the Prius that opens the hatch--I mean OPENS not just unlocks the hatch, i.e., pops it up so it is a no-hands opening?

    Thanks.

You can leave the Prius unlocked; it doesn't actively lock when you leave it. It works best to just leave the key in your pocket or pocketbook all the time. There is no need to take it out to drive the car.

I am a nubie, and am not sure about other models, but the II will not open the hatch without using your hand to do so.

The IV and V have the 3-door SKS but this only unlocks the doors but does not pop open the hatch. You still must press the open button and pull up on the hatch. It is not a hands-free opening.

For those asking about the possibility of adding passenger side SKS to a package II: I had my doors apart today to add V-Block to Damp the doors. There is a blue connector that is not populated which the SKS module should plug into.
I have not removed the cover on the hatch yet but I would not be surprised to find the same blue connector under there.

Awesome! I wonder if there is any programing needed in order for the sensors to work. Does anyone know the part number for the sensors? When I pick up my 3, I can also pick up the sensors and test out if they work without any extra programing.

Here are some photos of the populated blue plug.
I don't know if the part numbers encompass all components that would need to be added for other doors to have SKS but this may help someone embark on some research.

^^ Thanks for the post. Still waiting for my Prius to get delivered so I'll try and find some more info on if the sensors can just be hooked up and work or if there's more to it than that. I have a feeling that the car probably just polls at the sensors for a key and if one is present then it will open so no sensor would mean no signal to open.

I wish people would stop saying "didn't you read the manual?"!

Yes, we read it. Yes, we had discussions with the dealer about how it sucks not to have the 3-door SKS. And we're not cheap. We'd gladly pay $500 for the option if you gave it to us (as I plan to pay for the remote start). The thing about Prius owners who upgrade to new Priuses is... we're not sheep and we don't follow the crowd. We might not want a IV because we don't care about leather seats, or because we plan to install our own $2000 DVD/NAV system because that's better than the factory option. And to remove a capability that was once available from the Prius II, with the lame excuse that we could pay $4000 more for the IV is just that, lame. It ruins our love affair with Prius and Toyota, which is something they should have given some thought to as they setup the list of options.

Programming the car so one grip on the sks drivers door opens all the doors and hatch at once helps a great deal, not as good as 3 door sks, but better than the standard setup:)

This might be the Dealers (or is it Stealers?) demanding that Toyota push people into a higher trim level. It's the same with the 5k mile reminder to have the tires rotated.

Various Toyota OEM parts websites, like the one for DiscountToyotaParts (add dot-com at the end) list parts for the Keyless entry components which don't seem to cost that much, but there's not enough info to say what each part does and which ones you'd need. I wonder if a body shop might know, since they'd probably have experience replacing smashed doors/handles. Not being a mechanic or electrician myself, I think that's where I might go to have someone else do the mod for me.

Or maybe we should all just pound the virtual doors of CoastalTech till they come up with the mod.

My wife travels with me most of the time and being the gentleman, and happily married man that I am I always open her door for her before going to the driver's side and getting in myself. This necessitates fishing out my fob and pushing the unlock button twice. Quite often my double click is misread as a single click and only the driver's door unlocks which means I need to double click again. At this rate the unlock button will wear out rather quickly on my fob.

I am still wondering why I need to double click my fob to unlock all of the doors? If I only wanted the driver's door unlocked I would just walk up to it and touch the sensor on the back of the handle. I even tried changing the default to unlock all doors when the driver's door sensor is touched. It unlocks all doors but I still needed to double click the remote to unlock the passenger door. I changed it back to the default as I don't want all of the doors to unlock on that few occasions that my bride takes the car herself. So this is why I for one would like to install an antenna and door sensor on the passenger side. I really don't care that much about the hatch, but that would also be handy sometimes.

I just found a smartkey system which cost 330$ for a one way system and 430$ for the 2 ways. It is from auto innovation (Home page). The ST800 is one way and the 2 way is the ST960. Also found them on ebay. There is a guy on youtube that installed it on his camry. He said it was quite "easy" spending half a day installing it. There is also a remote start on the systems.

If only I had more time, I would install one!
