I just got off the phone with the service person and scheduled my 5000 mile maintenance under my service plan.

So I asked whats included with this service..and faster than the disclaimer at the end of a car sales commercial I was told.

Scribbled it all down .....here it is...

    oil change w/ filter
lube doors (theres no grease on them now)
lube suspension (really there are grease fittings? me thinks not )
    check air filter
    check brakes
    check lights
    check fluids
    install BG kit
    road test

I had to question whats the installation of the BG Kit? I was told its a fuel and oil additive. Does anyone know what exactly this is and its purpose?

    thanks.. Al

    thanks..

I found BG's website heres the stuff:
    http://www.bgprod.com/products/fuelair.html

I guess since Toyota actually uses these products, they must work!

the plan works like this...every 5000 miles I get free service -
but the plan expires in 1 year...( sneaky devils) I figger' I might only have 13-14 k in 1 year so I'll just get the 15,000 service then.

What I have is called the "classic" plan.. they gave it to me as an incentive to buy so as I always say.... if its free its for me!

I have 3 certificates, and I simply present one at each 5k service.

    the documentation says this:
every 5k miles factory trained techs will perform necessary preventative maintenance that will prolong the live of your new Prius. Your Toyota Auto Care benefits include:
    Oil and Filter changes
    lubrication of key chassis parts
complete 19 point inspection which is this:

    fluids check and replenished:
    windshield wiper
    brake master cyminder
p/s (if equipped) ...huh.. you can get manual steernig still?
coolant (I assume ICE and ECU on pri)
    differential.. probably not on Pri
clutch master cylender (manual tranny..not on pri I'm sure)
    transfer case (4wd only)
    tranny (definitely not on pri)

    visual inspection items:
    air filter
    axle boots
    drive boots
    pcv valce
    cooling system (for leaks)
    exhause/muffler
    hoses
    wipers
    shocks/suspension
tire pressure (check and adjust) I'm sure they'll reduce my tp :D
    tire wear

    hope this explains it!

It sounds like it was something you would have needed to do at purchase. I can't imagine it being a worthwhile purchase after.

As seen in other posts, just bring the car in and tell them what you want done - don't tell them what "service" your bringing it in for (i.e. 15k mile service..etc). Only exceptions I'd make is when more than visual inspections are required, such as the 30k mile service.

Apparently lots of Toyota Dealers add the BG "MOA" Oil Additive as part of their regular oil change.

    http://www.bgprod.com/products/engineoil.html

One of the big things it claims is that it's a sludge preventative, and given the uproar caused by the sludging Toyota Engines, it may just be a CYA.

I specify that they are NOT to use it on mine. I put in Mobil1 which is plenty sludge resistant for me, and the BG additive is straight 30 Weight, not Multi-Vis. I see no reason to compromise the viscosity of my oil for the possible benefit of the sludge prevention.

Though, I must admit, of all the oil additives that one seems to have a good track record.

I don't think this is a plan offered by Toyota which you purchase at the dealer while purchasing a car. He is not talking about changing his oil at the 5000 mile interval that is stated in your Passport.
I think this is something completly different

It sounds to me like an oil change, plus a bunch of fluff.

Most good technicians will do much of the inspection during an oil change anyway. I just had my oil changed and they topped of fluids..etc. It's always in their best interest to look for other issues, since that means more work for them.

Reading his post, this is what he states:

So it's really an oil change, lube and 19 point inspection, which is really just checking things over.

ah.. yes, but free because it was a promotion they were offering as an incentive. I don't know when he purchased, but if he's at 5k, it was probaby over the summer or prior to all the increased demand. I don't see any need for dealers to offer incentives like that now.

I got the plan from the dealer, all the paperwork arrived in the mail about 2 weeks after I got the car.. it looks like some thing official from Toyota, the folder it came in says "Toyota autocare". What I have is officially called "Toyota autocare ) Classic Plan" . (there is no space between the words auto & care) So I assume thats what to ask for if you want to purchase it. do not know how much it is, like I said it was a freebie with the car. Am I the only one here who has this?? I assummed it was available for all Toyotas from the dealership not just the Pri.

the coupon says to present the coupon to "their" dealership, I thought about going to a different dealership (and have it done while I'm at work) but I havn't persued that, it's my first service so I'm going to find out how the service is where I got the car.

I've noticed a lot of Toyota dealers, at least here in Manitoba, carry the BG car care line. Apparently the taxi fleets use the BG oil additive to minimise motor oil sludging, which one can expect in winter at -40 in city driving.

Personally I like to use Mobil 1 or any other good synthetic with a very high TBN and detergent level. Say you can't "afford" synthetic oil than a good HD diesel motor oil will also have very high TBN and detergents to control soot levels produced by modern emission controlled diesel motors.

You can also get HD diesel motor oil in different viscosity grades, so you don't have to run a straight SAE 30 or a 15W-40 in your car: 10W-30 is even used on many new HD diesel motors, with 5W-30 as a "winter" viscosity.

The only thing I would worry about is adding BG oil additives to a motor already running synthetic oil. There would be no need to, and the additives may not even be compatible. So use common sense and remember YMMV

It's similar to the Toyoguard, fuel injector service, 3000 mile oil change recommendation etc. many service departments suggest.

In other words it's an expensive and, in IMHO, uneccesary add-on the dealer uses to further increase his profit while he has your car in his shop.

FWIW, the only additive I use is Techron fuel additive since it has a great reputation for keeping the fuel system clean.

Guys, BG products are generally pretty good. The MGC concentrate is INCREDIBLE in a manual transmission. When you change the fluid in your manual transmission, add the concentrate first, then top it off with gear oil.

The improvement in shifting is truly amazing, particularly in cold weather.
