That is crazy awesome, man! Congrats

I 'm curious about the gallons pumped though. I mean how could you get that much fuel in there without filling up the filler neck?

 

I always fill it up to the brim, but could you tell me why it is not good to fill it up that much?
Nobody ever told me this, so I really would like to know.

Most cars have a charcoal canister to absorb the fuel fumes while you're getting gas. If you overfill your tank, you run the risk of contaminating this canister. I did this in my '02 Sonata. It kept getting harder and harder to put any gas in it. The pumps would shut off after .6 gal. I would have to wait about 15 sec. for the fumes to dissipate without the help of the charcoal canister. It was a $600 repair, so I never bothered.

 

Same thing happened with our Hyundai.

 

1998 Nissan Altima. The Nissan Service people wanted $400 to solve the probem of "slow fuel fill". This included replacing the cannister and other assorted labor activities. The car is a great runner, but it's market value was less than the price of the new cannister. So I did not have them do the work. Instead I went home and disconnected the vent hose where it enters the cannister, and walking away and forgetting to re-attach the hose, solved the problem (albeit illegally in some states). It appears that overfilling the tank when gassing up eventually leads to destruction of the cannister's efficiency, creating a partial blockage. Disconnecting the hose allows the tank to vent freely when filling with gas. But; you did not hear this from me.

I have filled our Prius several times right to the brim, and
nothing ever broke, the check engine light never went
on, the engine never seized up or exploded.

Nothing had or has happened......

As long as you don't spill gas into the vent at the top of the neck you should be okay, even if you do spill it would take many time to begin to notice an issue over several years. It was easier to do safely before they started to install the rubber seals on the gas pumps.

The gas will always be able to slosh. Tanks are made so some air is trapped in the top of the tank to allow for expansion.

 

How did this post turn into a discussion about over filling? I think there was amazing mileage posted at the beginning of this discussion but I just can't remember how great it was....

You don't want to over fill your tank. In other words, when it shuts off, STOP! Yes, you can put more gas in, but what you are doing is messing with the car's emission system. Prolonged filling it up to the point you describe will eventally damage the car. Your emission system is a sealed system and NEEDS that room for fuel expansion and fuel vapor control.

Of course, you could ask your dealer what the vapor recover cannister costs to replace.

 

I have an 03 Tacoma with the canister under the truck bed. It cost me $600 to have them remove the bed to replace the canister because I overfilled the tank.

 

You guys are all missing the point cproaudio accomplished a 1,100 mile tank and you guys do not even acknowledge that whats wrong with you guys???? His car is under warranty for 3 years if he overfills while under warranty its Toyota's problem and if he has extended warranty then he can over fill for a long time!!

 

Who can install PHEV kits and where can I get one? I'll assume it takes a minimum of $3 grand to get this done (less if you are brave/smart enough to DIY)
