So I had my Prius IV for about a month now, drove about 1950 miles. I am only getting 44 mpg, is something wrong with my car? I read on somewhere on the forum that I should see a increase in MPG after the first 1000 - 2000 miles. Almost 2000, still nothing. I do live in New York City, but it's not that cold now compared to last month. I only saw an increase in MPG on my 3rd tank of gas, at only 47.5 and from there it fell to 44 range. Anyone have an idea? I checked my tire pressure and it's at 38 front 36 rear. Any insight would be appreciated.

goodenough, have you looked at the fuel economy complaints/queries sticky? The questions generally cover all of the things that cause people to have less-than-average fuel economy. It might be tough to get great FE in NYC, given the traffic situation and colder temps. I don't think 44 MPG is cause for alarm.

Thanks to the lack of snow and the slightly above freezing weather I'm finally seeing low 40's average per tank (hand calculated). I really think 50mpg tank average will be no problem once actual warm weather comes and after I get my snow tires off next week.

A bit of a note... I did an overnight trip to Boston from my home in VT last week. Had the onboard computer up to 47.5 on the way down. But zipping around heavy, rather "aggressive", Boston traffic the following day it came DOWN to 42.x, not up. I know the City rating is higher, but I think that when that city driving requires lots of jockying around and the inability to creep away from lights and stay in the EV zone, then you aren't going to necessarily see stellar numbers.

Weather was in the 40's and low 50's yesterday. Round trip from my home in VT to Lowell MA and back, 250 miles, computer showed 53.8 mpg for the ride down, and was at 48.7 when I got home.

This will be our best tank average since we got the car in December.... hoping to push my Fuelly lifetime average over 40. ;)

Can't wait to get my snow tires off this week.

    New 2011:
Performed a little test yesterday. With engine warmed up, reset the "B" trip, drove home from the barn (country road, 5.1 mi) and registered 61.8 mpg.
Then this morning from a cold start (overnight 55 deg), reset "B" trip and drove 3.1 mi stop and go in town, and registered 39.4 mpg. Not too scientific, but gives one an idea of what you can see.
I always keep "A" trip to give me mpg and miles between fillups (normally between 9.5 and 10.5 gallons). Most of my dailly trips are between 5 and 15 miles. Keep the tires at recommended levels.

Had my Prius for just over a month now and have driven about 1500 miles in it (this includes a long road trip from DFW to houston).

Last tank of gas mpg figures were this:
    Computer: 49.7 mpg
    Hand: 48.6

    Not too bad I'd say.

I'm a little over 2 months in so far... hoping when the weather stabilizes we can get out of the stupid winter blend fuel. I'm thinking the change should be in a couple weeks. I am using TripA per tank, TripB is basically from birth - about 2mi on odo when reset.

    2010 Prius(III)-06/10
    MPG: Last: 49.60 (51.6mfd+4.04%) All: 43.34 (44.8mfd+3.36%)

    Total 11 fills; 94.476g; 4,095 mi; 7.73¢/mi
    Last/All: 35 / 33MPH
    AvgTripTemp Last: 51.6º(73H|28L) All: 27.7º(73H|–11L)
    44/42psi

    Tank Avg: 372.3mi (438H|296L) •• 8.59gal (9.4|7.3)
    $28.77 (33.11|24.56) •• $3.35/g (3.75|3.04) •• 7.73¢/mi (8.29|7.03)

Curious to see if the tank starts taking a little more per fill - I would like to see a longer range.

I very much appreciate the great info here, and the people who take time to post their helpful hints, tips, experiences and whatever else comes to mind!

    Chris :)

    2011 Prius II:

First fill after the dealer initial fill-up. (don't know how full it was, but guage was full)

Drove 469 miles @ 9.68 gals. 48.45 mpg (rounded off after clickoff only about 0.04 gals) Miles to Empty now reads 576 miles.

Prius computer indicated 49.1 mpg, so that is not too bad.

Driving was about 12 eleven mile trips, one 85 mile trip (55 mph on country roads with A/C), and the rest 3 to 6 mile trips of stop and go town driving (weather has not required A/C). (I normally just drive the car like I would drive my non-hybrid.)

Just FYI, when the beep sounded and guage started flashing, the miles to empty read 25 miles. I drove 5 more miles on "0" to the gas station. (on my previous '05 Prius, I could drive 35 or so miles after the beep and fill up with 10.4 or so gals).

Bought our 2010 Prius III in February. Fill ups so far....all are calculated numbers as the computer shows about 2 mpg more.

    1st tank... 40.7 mpg 299.3 miles
    2nd ........ 44.6 mpg 363.8 miles
    3rd ........ 46.0 mpg 391.5 miles
    4th ........ 46.8 mpg 418.8 miles

    Average MPG...... 44.7 mpg

The mpg are getting better with no tricks being used. I did have heavier 16" wheels from my Matrix on it for the last tank. No grill block.....yet. :D

Bought a used 2010 with 7300 miles two weeks ago. Finally had to fill up. 420 miles on 8.5 gallons, 49.4 mpg (dash said 50.7). This car is fantastic. I don't miss the 4runner 15 mpg.

I have about 6000 miles on my 2010 Prius. Started getting about 49, now about 45. I drive conservatively, no change in driving routes or aggressiveness since I bought the car. Anyone think this is within the realm of expected mileage for this car? I sure don't. I took it to the dealer and they found nothing wrong, just said to take it back if it continues.

I just got 66.1 mpg after a trip I took across MN and WI. I did have a tail wind which was very nice. :) The total mileage was 537.

My 2010 has about 30,500 miles. Trip B has never been reset and reads 53.3 MPG. Purchased in Mid August. So, it will be higher by 1 year anniversary. Will post then. John
